Since Las Vegas is so difficult to track murders (I think because of tourism) this is the best I can find:

As of 2-23-16 there were 24 homicides in Las Vegas this year.

Last year (2015) looks like there were 133 homicides

Wow, LV has been flying under the radar lately, but that's a really high murder rate so far. When's the last time LV has had a higher murder rate than Atlanta which is sitting at 15 murders?

Las Vegas Police covers most of the metropolitan area given that many communities are unincorporated and city boundaries are pretty irrelevant there. The police districts also don't line up with the City of Las Vegas, but a general number of murders that actually occurred within the city limits is about 11, assuming all of them occurred within the incorporated areas of the city.

I've seen North Las Vegas on Cops and they have their own police force. Does that get mixed in too?

It doesn't seem like it. Henderson's not included either.

But the incorporated parts of the city are pretty tiny. The whole Las Vegas strip, and basically 90% of the stuff associated with Vegas, lies outside of the city's technical boundaries (but all these areas have LV address and administration).

So? What does that have to do with where the homicides occur? Plus the City of Las Vegas is the same land area as Detroit. And no one ever calls Detroit tiny.

DC is currently at 18 as of March 4, which is more representative of the years prior to last year's spike.

I don't understand your questions. What does anything you wrote have to do with what I wrote?

You were saying that Las Vegas only had 11 murders going by the incorporated part of the city. That's why I responded that it makes no sense to discount the majority of the city which isn't incorporated. Then you respond by saying who cares where the murders occur. That's the whole point of this thread. Counting murders by locale.

And, yeah, Detroit is absolutely tiny going by Sunbelt standards, though not sure what that has to do with anything. I was obviously talking population, not irrelevant land area.

I didn't realize you meant city = contagious metro area. Then it makes sense to say the City of Las Vegas is tiny relative to it's metro area, but then that's true of most metros.

The other poster mentioned how Atlanta had 15 murders and a low per capita rate but my responding point was that LVMPD's homicide rate technically isn't an equivalent comparison to Atlanta's homicide rate precisely because LV's homicide count includes the whole metro area (minus 2 suburbs) so you can't use Las Vegas's 600,000 population to calculate the homicide rate. You would instead have to use the metro population since that's the area LVMPD covers. To use LV's 600K population, you can only count the homicides that occurred within the incorporated City of Las Vegas (which as I tried to point out, isn't clear cut) otherwise it's an inaccurate homicide rate.

When calculating the murder rate of a resort city like Las Vegas you also have to keep in mind that due to the huge numbers of transients the actual population at any given time is much higher than the permanent resident population that the crime rates are based on.

Apart from murdering, Las Vegas is quite useful somehow.

First, it relieves people who're still dumb and can't compute probability from their money.

Second, and that's the best, it sues the French hypocrital socialist establishment.

Namely that guy who's a funniest gambler and the son of an older man born to a wealthy Parisian family that was 1 - prime minister, 2 - minister of the (national) budget and 3 - yet recently minister of foreign affairs. All of that during his way, way too long political career. And I must be forgetting a lot.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ing-debts.html

Not only that, the son tried to make people think he could purchase a large apartment in a luxury district of Paris on his own, by some kind of laughable trick (a con), while he never could actually afford it by himself.

Not enough yet, daddy has a fine art collection. So when he was the minister of the budget, he took advantage of the office to pass a tax cut on art works.

Pretty typical of the French socialist establishment, corrupted to their bones. Elders still call them "gauche caviar" (caviar left) by laughing. And those people constantly claim to teach us all about life and justice, with their hilariously huge and costly administration.

It wouldn't be so bad if those clowns weren't currently in charge of the climate change and sustainable development policy. Who will trust them, now?

That's what happens when folks drop in on Vegas thinking they will make a killing. They get away with murder.

Expect a despicable jump in the Philly number as there was 6 murders yesterday 3/8/16. 5 by gun shots, 1 stabbed to death. Included in that was brother to NBA player Dion Waiters.

Las Vegas: 34

This place is blowing up. I live here and there are a lot of people right now that do not feel safe. Metro says the YTD total of 34 so far this year is an 88% increase over the total at this time last year. Summer time might be really bad.
