Continuing my tour of Spain, Alicante is the capital of the Costa Blanca and a popular sun destination. In fact, the beach is just steps away from the city's historic attractions.
The Mercado Central is a covered market for locals, offering much choice from meats and seafood to fruits and vegetables.

I had questioned myself whether it was worth stopping in Alicante for a few days. This was the reason why I decided to keep it on my itinerary.
The Castillo de Santa Barbara is an amazing fortress perched on top of Alicante's city centre. To facilitate the visit, a long tunnel leads from the city to the elevator.
The views feel less special without the arduous walk though.
A number of interesting exhibitions reside the old fortress buildings.
