Atlanta Streets Alive - Highland Avenue

Last weekend was the semi-annual Atlanta Streets Alive event. Similar to Bogota's Ciclovia, the Paris Plage, New York's Summer Streets and a variety of other "open street" projects, the event closes streets to cars to allow residents to bike, walk, play, and celebrate the city.

Inaugurated in 2010 on Edgewood Avenue (photo thread here), the event has been held several more times on Edgewood. This year as part of the plan to rotate the event around the city, a 2 mile stretch of Highland Avenue was chosen. Highland connects the two pleasant historic neighborhoods of Virginia Highland and Inman Park. This edition of Streets Alive was a huge success, attracting more than 10,000 people.

The route:

1. Sidewalks of the Virginia Highland neighborhood shortly before the start of the event.

I like this Thread. I am beginning to see more folks come out of their Atlanta abodes onto the streets. That is a good sign. I am reconciled with Atlanta.

Great thread for what was a great event! The weather really co-operated too.

Also...

After going the entire length of Highland, I bumped into some friends and we decided to have a pint/people watch at Limmerick. Stroller cat was a topic of much conversation.

Nicely done!
It was a perfect day and a perfect location...N. Highland had something interesting going on almost every step of the 2 mile length. I was glad to see that the 'open container' laws were not enforced, a move that definitely enhanced the experience.

I enjoyed a brief chat with Trainiac...we shold have organized an ATL meet-up!
