Does anyone have the details regarding the changes made to the Angels Flight station up on Olive Street?
Here are the basics that I know (or think I know).

When Angels Flight started about 1901, the Olive Street station was just a small shelter.
I think this may be it next to the Elks building.

About 1910, this beautiful station was built. Here is a photo, which I believe Michael Ryerson
posted (sorry if it was someone else).





Here is where I start to get lost. By the early 1920's, the station was down to about one third of its size.
What happened? It appears in this photo that the bottom of some of the pillars were still in place.

Then, maybe sometime in the 1930's or 1940's (again I don't know for sure), someone with absolutely no architectural
ability tacked on the ugly addition which remains to this day.

Does anyone know what happened to the 1910 station and why was it never restored?





ER - Pretty ironic that the movie sphinx also got buried in sand and had to be discovered by archaeologists.

If I remember correctly, there was also a Mike Lyman's at Burbank/Lockheed. I'll have to look into it. Does anyone else remember that?

Even though I found this on ebay, there's always the possibility it's a LAPL photograph...or from the UCLA archives.
..or maybe we've even seen this view before on NLA. It's hard to check without solid information.

As no PRO answered 24 hours later, I'll try.
This picture gave me an headache : no way to identify what section of Downtown it is. The street on the back center/right seems to be Second Street but it wouldn't be cut by the buildings on the front. At last I had the idea to place a mirror in front of my screen and then it seemed to start to make sense. My guess : in the mirror we are looking East from Beaudry or Boylston to Court Street.

AlvaroLegido, I believe I found the same building (left-foreground) in an old file of mine.
If I remember correctly this is a detail from a 1904 pano. (I'm looking for it now)

..but in this view you can read the large painted sign on the north side of the building...it says Wieland's.
More interesting are the two stubby chimneys. (they're missing in the 1909 sepia photo)

I think this might be the same area as in the above photo (in the red rectangle). The twin white buildings give it away..as does the clump of trees,
and the houses on the crest of the hill.

-titled "Looking west from downtown 1904" The buildings in the detail above must be far far away, or else I have the wrong pano.

My feeling is this is of the Westlake District around 8th looking N/E and picking up some of Angelino Hts ridge - with mountains looming over Pasadena ,etc in far distance.....

That is the third Times building. It was built on the same site as the second building after that was blown up in 1910. It co-existed with the State Building for several years until the Times moved into their 4th and current home, and then it was torn down about 1938. There were a series of posts relating to the building this summer. The remains of the State Building were removed this year to turn that area into a park, and in the process they uncovered a two-story underground parking structure on the corner of 1st and Broadway, with a footprint matching the third Times building. The information our resident sleuths put together suggested very strongly that this parking structure was originally the basement and sub-basement of the third Times building. After the 1938 demolition this area was part of the front lawn of the State Building, so the structure was not seen again from outside until they were removing it this past summer.

It looks to me to be part of the panoramic photo titled "Los Angeles, Cal., Feb. 8th, 1909, looking northwest from Hill and 7th Streets".

Do you guys remember Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In? In their filmed sgments they used to have a running gag with a man in a yellow raincoat atop a tricycle who would ride it a few feet in some usually non-descript area of Los Angeles and then tip over.

I was watching an episode last month and there was the yellow raincoated man on the tricycle at the base of Angel's Flight as it was descending and when it reached bottom he tipped over. I was surprised to see that.

Great evocative photo e_r. Can't help but wonder what was on their minds in that year, the middle of World War II? Such a generic sounding name for a company, too. Wonder if it had anything to do with the war? In most photos like this it seems people generally are not smiling and often a lot of blank expressions, but nearly everyone in this picture seems to have a pleasant enough demeanor!

Flyingwedge reminded me that the building in the distance (with the green x) is the Westmoore Hotel at 7th and Francisco.
The church (blue x) is the First Baptist Church at 725 S. Flower.
