I have to agree that visually, Chicago has the best city flag by far. Washington DC, Denver, Phoenix would make up the next tier. Other decent city flags would be St Louis, New Orleans and Jackson, Mississippi.

every couple of years there's a flag thread

and I post this every time. Great explanation of what makes a great Flag

Chicago flag is very ingrained in the City. When cops die or firefighters die is usually going to be a Chicago flag draped over the coffin.

Like below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJhO8PMwpo0

Its common for it to be even more revered in some circles than the national flag. That my sound silly but I'm dead serious. I don't think there is a city more tied to their city flag anywhere else in the USA.

And portrayed on TV shows

I've always liked Cincinnati's city flag, though it'd probably be better without the seal in the middle

Chicago's flag needs a minor update... something like a steaming slice of deep dish in the middle of the stars.

Come on, let's turn this tired topic into a pizza thread.

that's one of the great things about the chicago flag; those 4 big red stars are easily customizable into just about anything.

great video. Most city flags fail miserably by the standards of quality described in that video.

It was also designed to increase the stars in the future with other great civic achievements.

I honestly believe if Chicago had the Summer Olympics instead of Rio there would be a 5th star later added. Look at my profile photo. This was when Obama was POTUS and personally advocated for it the international Olympic heads and committees could be bought off in scandals affairs'

I'm not saying a Summer Chicago Olympics would be the be all end all..... Or the most important nor the most impressive. But Sydney took the world stage with their Olympic games without a doubt. It was a free summer of a billion dollar add Champaign That they are still using and winning today weather or not the games to the city or country cost more initially than it took in.

But Daley and the corporate heads could not change the vote even though Obama advocating for it. Unfortunately the chance for a Chicago summer Olympics is outside my lifespan and may never happen. But we were really close. I know this to be real and true.

https://robbiebob.wordpress.com/2012...chicagos-flag/

As you may recall, Chicago did not win the bid to host the 2016 Olympics. If it had, officials in the Office of the City Flag Design would have considered adding a fifth red star to the iconic Chicago flag to commemorate the event. The new flag would have resembled the flag below

Yeah thats bad and breaks a lot of rules.

Number one no words. I know you watched the videos and understand the rules.

Thanks for sharing that thing as an example of what not to do.

Perhaps they can fix it.

The current flag of San Antonio, Texas, isn't too terrible:

(Image from Wikimedia Commons)

When flown along with the U.S. national and Texas state flags, it creates the odd processional quality of the the white stars, the blue fields, and the red stripes becoming sequentially smaller the higher the rank:

(Image from runyib.com)

However, the largely unused coats of arms probably speaks more to the historicism the city would like to convey, even if the arms were drawn in ye olde yesteryear of 1972:

Much more officially used is the city seal, based on an original wood carving crafted in 1925:

If it were up to me, we would be emblazoning our city with more Hapsburg double-headed eagles as is mounted over the historic Spanish Governor's Palace:

According to the rules

It would be a good flag if they removed the building in the star

It can’t be seen from 150 feet away anyway

It’s good

But no seals or buildings of any kind

That’s the rules of the map maker specialists

This flag (or something similar) would be better for San Antonio:

Personally, I’d place seven five-pointed white stars vertically on the hoist in blue (with the center star larger than the three above and three below it), with vertical stripes of white then red along the fly with the boundaries of the stripes the outline of the Alamo. Basically, the above but rotated and with seven stars instead of one.

The seven stars represent the six sovereign flags that have flown over Texas (France, Spain, Mexico, Texas, United States, and the Confederacy - or alternatively if you’d like, as I prefer to, the indigenous groups that inhabited Texas prior) plus the larger star representing the city.

San Antonio was the most prominent city in the region comprising Texas in every single one of these entities. It was not until the post-civil war era that any city has eclipsed San Antonio. I suppose that comment might be more suited to the current Power Shift: Cities thread...
