Second phase of FODDS at KLIA to be completed by November — Malaysia Airports
Bernama April 15, 2021 00:06 am +08

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (April 14): KL International Airport (KLIA) continues to enhance runway safety as it enters the second phase of the field trial for the high-precision Foreign Object Debris Detection System (FODDS).

In a statement today, Malaysia Airports said the first phase was launched in 2019 with two towers completely equipped with state-of-the-art FODDS radars.

Malaysia Airports group chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said the second phase involves full installation of the remaining nine towers with the same high precision radars and is expected to be completed by the end of November this year.

He said the radars can detect any Foreign Object Debris (FOD) within the range of 500 metres in 10 seconds by using the latest high-end radio over fibre technology.

"The new technology enhances the accuracy and efficiency of runway safety surveillance by detecting even the smallest FOD item such as rice grain, pebble, wildlife to avoid unwanted aircraft incidents or accidents from happening," he said.

The second phase of the FODDS will be fully operational by 2Q of 2022. Installation of the new advanced system is a tripartite collaboration between Malaysia Airports, Hitachi Kokusai Electric Co Ltd (HiKE) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Mohd Shukrie said KLIA has been keeping up with the latest technology and global airport practices to strengthen operational safety.

"We are proud to be the first airport in the world to be installed with this fully functional new FODDS technology on our runway, after the prototype in Narita, Japan. This is an example of embracing technology to future proof our airport and be more ready to handle future demands with the recovery of air travel.

Foreign Object Debris Detection System (FODDS) Technology
FOD is defined as, “Any object located in an inappropriate location in the airport environment that has the capacity to injure airport or airline personnel and damage aircraft”, which can cause damage to aircraft as well as injury airport employees. FOD incurred the global aviation industry $1.26 billion annually in direct costs, and $13.9 billion annually in indirect costs (e.g., flight delays, runway closure). Hence, new technologies for FOD detection system is developed to continuously inspect and detect FOD.

KLIA starts disinfecting arriving baggage with newly installed tunnels
Bernama March 19, 2021 13:30 pm +08

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (March 19): The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has started disinfecting arriving baggage with its new automatic ultraviolet (UV) radiation system to curb Covid-19 and ensure airport safety remains at the highest level.

In a statement, airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said the latest Airports 4.0 initiative comprising UV bulbs installed in an enclosed tunnel within the baggage handling system (BHS) disinfects baggage automatically as it passes through the conveyor system.

MAHB group chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said the company had invested heavily in UV technology because the UV short wavelength had been proven to effectively eliminate surface contaminants such as mold, bacteria and other microbial biofilms.
