LYON & the Beaujolais

Some friends from Montreal are completing their masters degree in Lyon, France. I had the occasion to visit them. It was my 3rd time in this beautiful city, the second agglomeration in France by population (2 311 000 inhabitants in 2016).

Here are a few pictures from around the city. I may post a few more. I had a wonderful time in Lyon; the city is gorgeous, culturally rich, very walkable (if you like slopes and stairs), and the recent developments make it even more appealing.

A short day trip in the BEAUJOLAIS

Le Beaujolais is a pays (countryside) famous for its wine, located North - North-West from Lyon, between the Saône and Azergues rivers. The cultural landscape is made of rolling hills covered with vines.

Confluence : the new Lyon

Confluence is a district of Lyon's 2nd arrondissement. It's located at the tip of the point formed by the confluence of the Saône and the Rhône rivers. Up until 2009, the area was mostly centered around a major station and market (Perrache) and brownfields. The masterplan for the new neighbourhood, adopted in 1999, aimed to double the size of the city's downtown. Since then, the area has become a laboratory for architecture, urbanism and technology.

I only have 1 picture of the small metro network. The system was quite convenient and efficient.

Interesting : I also do have a couple of friends from Quebec who are completing a master's degree at Lyon 3. Le monde est petit.

I had a few misconceptions about Lyon and the Lyonnais before last year, when I came back. I felt the people there were a little... uptight. But this impression disappeared after my last visit. I found that the vibe was pretty laid back. Anyway, thanks for the pictures, and keep them coming

It's definitely one of the best cities to be for students, whether nationals or foreigners in this country.
Articles like this would second that statement.

Of course the Paris region is unrivaled when it comes to the number of higher education establishments, but life can be rough to students over here, due to the high cost of living.
Paying for a rental studio just can be a serious challenge over here when you don't have any stable wage. So no wonder it's not the most recommended to the youth.

I guess Lyon is a smart pick, though smaller Rennes and Montpellier are renowned for their youthful population.

Beautiful city! I have had in mind to make a weekend trip to Lyon for a while but never had the opportunity yet. Have seen the city from the plane once.

In 1984 I took the TGV from Paris to Lyon, and then a regular train on to Grenoble. The only thing I remember of Lyon was the pseudo-Eiffel Tower up on the hill. Thanks for posting photos of all the stuff I didn't get to see.

Not that small.
Lyon metro carried 212 million passangers in 2018.
That's almost as many as Washington Metro or Chicago L.
That's more than Vancouver skytrain, Boston subway or San Francisco BART.

Montreal metro had 271 million passengers in 2018.

I love Lyon. My husband and I spent a few days there on our honeymoon 2 years ago. We stayed in La Confluence and also did a day trip to the Macon wine region. We agreed that we could easily live there. It's practically perfect.

I absolutely loved wandering in La Croix-Rousse or around Terraille street. It definitely broke the "picture perfect" impressions I had on previous trips.

That's obviously a great performance for a 40-stations system. It also demonstrates that north american systems tend to underperform relatively to their european counterparts. The fact that the metro wagons were never over-crowded during my stay must have influenced my perception of the networks importance or business.

It does seem really liveable indeed! Though quite expensive.
