It had the look of South LA--I saw what looked like the end of the tracks in the other Federal Cold Storage pic... So followed the old LARy V line west from there...and before long, there was Compton and the house etc.

Does anyone recognize this building? It doesn't look familiar to me.

"Pasadena, circa 1920s."

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PASADENA-CAL...item5d58b75478

It appears to take up a whole block. -and what's that thing with the three globes in the middle of the street?

Hmmm, I can't imagine where that could be in Pasadena. I've never seen that image before, and I am unfamiliar with that 3-globe thing in the middle of the street...

This looks like a cool book to have:

Gentlemen, I believe the markings at the very to on the ends of the building are ice tongs for moving large blocks of ice.

According to the Old L.A. Restaurants website, that Tourmaline linked, in 1950 the Villa Capri opened at 1735 N. McCadden Place in Hollywood. (It was next door to Don the Beachcomber's restaurant at #1727, which had previously been located on the opposite side of the street.) In 1957, Villa Capri relocated to a larger, plusher building a few blocks away at 6735 Yucca Street, one block north of Hollywood Boulevard.

I could not find any photographs of the Villa Capri on McCadden Place. I did find this one of the
6735 Yucca Street address. It was taken in 1971.

photos all from Bruce Torrence/Hollywood Photographs

It turns out this location was not a "few blocks away" as described above.
McCadden Place is the first street to the left when you pass Highland Ave.
going east on Hollywood Blvd. It only runs about a block long and then hits
Yucca Street in a "T" as you can see in the photo, so the original Villa Capri
was only a half a block or so from there.

Here's an interior of it from 1960.

None of the two Don the Beachcomber's or Villa Capri's survive. They've all been demolished.
In fact, I wonder what is on that street nowadays?

I did find the following two photos of James Dean at the Villa Capri on McCadden Place.
They are dated 1955.

The female he is with is actress Ursula Andress. The others are not identified

I haven't researched anything, but I've wondered about that on occasion as well, especially watching films from the 30's and 40's. Let us know anything you find out again about this subject!

Guilty as charged! I admit I do my share of talking it up, but I'm unreasonably fond of it, having worked on the thing.

LAPD '53 has all sorts of shots of interest to the Noirisher. E.g., an interior shot (note the just-visible Buckley Mac-Gurrin murals) of the old Hall of Records, where the Board of Supervisors met, and where an irate homeowner punched a supervisor who then expired:

3610 S Flower (being moved for freeway construction):

2700 West Temple (a story told in LAPD '53 in Ellroy's inimitable style, also to be found here as recounted by the equally impressive Larry Harnisch):

(Interestingly, this ↑ was replaced by the 1966 LAPD Rampart Division Station.)

Groundbreaking on the Health Center & Police Administration Building:

The fabled Hildreth carriage house:

The DeVorss story is typically Los Angeles! Whose site would have you believe their patriarch "died suddenly in a dreadful accident"; Ellroy will tell you the actual sordid tale. 516 West 9th:

Straw hat, white gloves, a .38 revolver, and 211 P.C., at what's now 3540 MLK:

Here's the Admiral, some neighbors, and a fastback:

Looking at the Fifth St marquee of the Biltmore:

...and on and on it goes. A nice write-up in LA Magazine the other day gives the skinny on the ideas behind it, the production process, etc.

You're right, WW--of course, from the building's beginnings as Standard Ice. You really get the idea in the modern street view with the "crimp" in the image at left:

Thanks MPal. I expect the VCapri appears in some uncategorized previous NLA-posted-long shots. Curious about the subject being celebrated. Bon Voyage or Bon Appétit? "S.S. Sarno?"

The tower is part of the fire station that was moved when the freeway was put through. It was originally built in 1928 and housed Engine Company #6 . It originally faced onto Temple. The station lost the tower, which was for hanging hose to dry, when it was moved a block up Edgeware to the corner of Bellvue. It was also turned a quarter of a turn to fit onto the new lot. The station remains in its relocated spot but is no longer an active firehouse. The interior of the old firehouse has a tin ceiling and a firepole in the engine area. Dorm areas are above with the captains quarters. It was moved in 1949.

The house in the background, which sits at an angle to the lot, facing the corner of Edgeware and Bellevue, is still there, as are the ones directly across Edgeware. Just up the hill and around the corner to the left are the Carroll Avenue houses.

The building where the groceries are being delivered was also lost to the freeway.

This must be the old fire station. It now faces Edgeware Road between Bellevue Avenue and Boston Street.

GSV

A truncated tower still exists at the rear.

GSV

The building on the southwest corner of Edgeware and Temple (1300 W Temple) is a survivor, although it's just out of frame in Tourmaline's pictures. I found a build date of 1924.

GSV

Here's a 1948 aerial view which I think still shows the fire station, complete with tower, at its original location.

I'm looking at James Dean's hairline; is he wearing a hairpiece or was his head shaved for a role? I don't recall him having a receding hairline; in other photos it always looked like he had a full head of hair.

It appears to be where the Belmont Apartments were located in both the 1929 and 1941 photographs, but I'm not sure.

Well you can certainly look at the images and pretend that the accompanying Ellroyisms are so much Lorem Ipsum...but his tales do give the backstories, so you may want to slog your way through them. Each of these is significantly shorter than his new novel by about 720 pages, so, not too bad. Plus his introductory essay is written in full, erudite sentences and not in the staccato prose for which he is known—his take on Parker, LA, society, etc., may not be to everyone's digestion, personally, I eat it up gleefully. De gustibus non est disputandum!
