City in the western world with most direct/firsthand connection to Asia/Asians?

Another poll, this time, with firsthand links to Asia and Asians, diaspora, cultural, economic, immigration etc. .

Considering the LA area has the most Asians of any Metro in North America, the largest Korean, Thai, Filipino, etc pops outside of their home countries and the second largest Chinese population, i would say LA is the most connected. Going to Koreatown (which is massive and growing) or the San Gabriel valley is really an amazing experience.

However, because of the vast size of LA and the congregation of so many other ethnicities, it doesnt feel like the most Asian city in the Western World. A smaller city like Honolulu or Vancouver might

Honolulu by far.

Vancouver second.

That's in percentage terms relative to their size.

Probably Vancouver at the moment, but based on the way China is treating Australia, Sydney or Melbourne could become the most asian-influenced in the near future.

I am posting this message via the title

Direct First hand access to Asia. To me that's non stop.

Chicago has more flights to Asia without a layover than any East cost city because of the mere distance traveled.

NYC can fly to Tokyo or Shanghai without a refueling layover but its one of the longest flights in the world. Like 15.5 hours long in the air alone.

A lot of USA west flight travels to Asia takes the shortest route which by the globe the fly into Canada, than to Alaska, than to their final destination.

Its quite often one hears flights cut short and land in anchorage for fuel or kicking off drunken UK passengers going to east Asia via America.

The only real area that Chicago cannot fly direct non stop is Australia and NZ

Chicago has non stop flights to India ~ 14 hours.

Reaching Brazil or Argentina is easy. 12-13 hrs.

The only places Chicago cannot reach non stop are probably only the most distant places in the southern hemisphere. Like AU and OZ due to pure distance. I don't think any east coast city can reach them either. Travel to Australia and OZ is one of the most expensive round trip flights in the world or 4/5th of the America, and that's with a layover and a refueling.

And the time zone differences, wow.

And to think the UK used it as a penial colony for the poor and less appreciated peoples of its kingdom it turned out pretty well for at least the English forced settlement there. I cannot even imagine the written mail back than or the percentage that made it from the UK to AU.

I'm sure the Aboriginals would have preferred to go their own route but that is relatively distant history by now.

Anyhow, current or announced nonstop flights between selected North American and European airports and Asia and Pacific carriers, ON FOREIGN FLAG CARRIERS of Asia/Pacific countries.

I included Ontario with LA, Newark with NY and San Jose with SF.

If u find any errors, please point them out.

One observation: there are no nonstop flights btwn North America and Bangkok.

London appears to have the most flights to the region. Interestingly, NA has no nonstop flights to Bangkok whilst at present time, there are no nonstop flights between London and Australia/NZ, however, Qantas is challenging airplane manufacturers to make it happen.

How come there are no non-stops to Aus? I thought Heathrow website had them to the main cities. I'll edit Melbourne and Sydney out (Perth is available).

Yep London is the world's biggest air hub with 166 million passengers p/a, though now at capacity and with growing problems (they've been arguing about Heathrow/ Gatwick expansion for a decade now). It's under threat from Paris, Istanbul, NYC, Dubai and Beijing for the crown if it doesn't expand in time.

In terms of international scope Dubai is the best positioned, within a 3 billion person reach within a few hours, but Beijing has the biggest plans (up to 300 million capacity when Daxing opens next year).

Honolulu has the highest percentage of those with an Asian ethnicity, but it is mostly "Pan-Asianism," in that they all blend together into the local Hawaiian culture. Hawaiian born Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, etc. are less distinct from each other than say a Chinese American born in San Gabriel and a Filipino in Daly City.

On a sidenote, one thing I find interesting is how mainland US Filipinos seem to have an affinity for Hawaiian culture (reggae, food, etc.), whereas Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian Americans are not as much so.

Honolulu is kinda its own culture, IMO. I agree it's more Pan-Asian, and not really immigrant-oriented.

My vote is for Vancouver.

I put cities into a distance calculator expecting London to be really far to Tokyo, Hong Kong, etc. But the distances really are pretty comparable to the US West Coast. Meanwhile much of Asia is far closer to London than any major NA city is to Asia.

Sometimes London is even a connecting point from Asia to the US. Seattle lacks India connections, and anecdotally the Seattle-London route has a heavy connecting contingent from India, though it's not the shortest route.

Yeah, saw recently that Beijing is closer to London than it is to Melbourne. By about 1000 kms as well.

Honolulu has the largest Asian population proportionately, while by the same metric Vancouver has the largest Asian immigrant population. Numerically, metropolitan New York (2 million), Toronto (2 million), Los Angeles (1.8 million), SF Bay Area (1.8 million), and London (1.5 million in Greater London - maybe 2 million in the metropolitan area) are all pretty close for having the largest Asian populations in the Western world. London's population is heavily skewed towards South Asia though; and LA's & SF's towards East & Southeast Asia. New York and Toronto's are a little more balanced.

So, I voted for my own city since it's both proportionately and numerically very Asian; has a mix of immigrant, native, and temporary residents; and a good cross section of people from across the continent.

I reckon London city proper is nearer 2 million now, from 1.7 million in 2011 (population has grown by 700,000 since), metro higher of course.
