Interesting stuff. I like the landscape.

I just looked this up...St. Johns is like 1200 miles to NYC. I never would have guessed. In my mind's eye they are in the same region, which clearly isn't true.

St. Johns is also closer to London than NYC is to LA.

We're very far East, yeah - closer to Rome than Victoria, British Columbia (Canada's west coast).

Yeah. It hit hardest visiting Bermuda. Flying east out the States for ages over the open Atlantic Ocean and realizing home was WAY farther east than that

Quick update... it turned to shit again. This picture was taken by a friend TODAY. Literally, TODAY.

Also, VOCM's budget for giveaways is hilarious. These two kids just won some chips and a loaf of a bread.

Thoroughly enjoyable thread. Though I grew up in Upstate New York, these pics gave me a shiver several times.......Brrrrr.

Thanks for the extended tour and weather report.

AND it's the last of June. A mixed bag, but mostly good in the end.

Video Link

It got so cold we had to drink porter to keep warm.

But then the fog moved offshore. JUST.

There was some rainy bits...

There were some foggy bits...

SO MANY great days.

The fog was relentless, always licking at our heels.

The 27th was a gorgeous treat.

All you could hear where whales blowing.

And the ducks use the crosswalks.

The fog wanted us sssooo bad.

Had to run out for some nicotine juice for my douche flute. It was LOVELY up in Rabbittown...

But the thick of fog downtown...

A few days later, muggy but mild.

And next up, today, the last day of June. New post for that because I accidentally did a thing.

So today, for the last day of the month, I decided to go for a little walk. And I ended up doing more than intended...

But it was SO nice!

So, in chronological order...

Started in Rabbittown but didn't take a picture until Georgestown. It's a nice little hipster neighbourhood. It was the city's first suburb back in the day.

Then I cut down to Bannerman, which is one of the more well-to-do neighbourhoods in the core.

We do have SOME brick houses. They're rare, but there are a few.

From Bannerman, I cut down to Quidi Vidi - it surrounds Quidi Vidi Lake, hosts the Royal St. John's Regatta, etc. It's a mixed neighbourhood - mostly middle class with some pockets of lower.

Doesn't appear to have any sprawl featuring meaningless seas of asphalt dotted by meaningless box stores.

Nice pictures!

What's the cheapest airline to St. John's, and where are the cheapest places to fly in from?

There is no cheap option. You could definitely fly just about anywhere else in the developed world for less. Our direct flight to Dublin was recently re-routed through Halifax, Nova Scotia. We still have a direct flight to London but it's obscenely expensive.

If you can get to any major airport in Canada, you should be able to get a connecting flight to here for less than $1,000. For example, if you wanted to fly from Toronto (our largest city) to St. John's this weekend, it would cost $605 at the cheapest, $1,450 at the most.

What a unique, very charming looking city. I imagine not many Canadians even get around to be tourists there just due to how far removed it is? Stunning nonetheless. I'm truly shocked to learn it's 1200 miles to NYC!

It almost reminds me as if San Francisco and Reykjavik had a baby.

Aww, such a compliment - thank you!

We have a modest tourism industry. Its value is not that great, but its local significance, importance, and visibility is huge. People here if you asked them on the street would assume we're one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations, when in reality the actual number is near the bottom.

OMG I just fell in love and MUST visit one day.

I love the old charm and colourful homes. Perhaps it's because I am originally from Valparaiso in Chile if you've ever heard of it. It seems to have a similar rough gritty charm to it. Also I've heard Lisbon in Portugal has the same charm to it.

Greetings from Regina, SK.

An in-between post - we had some nice days before, and some nice days are yet to come I'm sure, but today - Pride parade day - was shit.

This is it. The little park where we watch the parade from every year. Most spectators (even on a nice day) are way further along the route - this is only a few blocks from the beginning. But it's OUR spot.

Ooookay, July.

Fortunately, I'm typing this while sweating to death in one of our hottest early-August days on record. Otherwise, I'd probably not make it through this post.

July started like a leafy January.

Video Link

And even when the rain stopped, it was just SO HEAVILY overcast.

But then the sun finally broke through...

That puts us about halfway through the month. I've already covered the Pride parade in a previous post, and as you can see it wasn't nice. That wasn't the only such day. Mother Nature can be so unkind...

For a brief moment, things genuinely warmed up. Uncomfortably hot, by our standards. I rushed from work to the Quidi Vidi neighbourhood to go for a little hike to the ocean to dip my feet.

This was about when I realized there was a climber just over my shoulder who could hear me singing and talking to myself. He aggressively avoided eye contact.

And then the skies opened up for a few days.

I kind of feel like your city and mine are long-lost cousins or college roommates or something... You've really gotta come down here and see if there's any validity to that feeling.
