I was born in 1980. At the time, there was a proposal to level about a third of downtown Asheville and replace it with a suburban-style mall. Here's a video from then featuring the spokeswoman of Save Downtown Asheville, Inc. In the late 70's, after the Asheville Mall opened up and drained the life out of downtown, the vacancy rate of downtown commercial and residential space rose to about 90%, and downtown was a ghost town until the 90's.

Not to spoil the suspense, but Save Downtown Asheville, Inc. won.

I was born in Ukraine, and we don't really have the traditional skylines of North America, so I'm gonna post a picture of Vancouver where I live now. I found a crazy good match: It says it was taken July 15, 1995, exactly one day before I was born.

Detroit in the 1990s didn't look too different than it does now. One Detroit Center (then known as Comerica Tower) was the only major skyscraper under construction. Hudson's was still standing as well as many other mid-rise towers, but they're mostly hidden in this view.

Thought-provoking thread.

Toronto, 1974. CN half-finished; FCP must have been starting to poke through somewhere, though I can't see it from this vantage.

Boston, 1969. This was the period of time when the city finally started building skyscrapers, both downtown and in the Back Bay (out of view).

And at least one of my family members was in that crowd of 100,000 anti-war protesters--she gave me the lapel pin she got there, haha.

born in rochester, ny, in 1978. the below photo is dated 'late 70s, and is of the university of rochester with downtown in the background.

almost forgot to look for rochester as my parents left when i was 8 mos old, or so.

closest i could find to a "skyline" pic.

Boston 1982, one year after I was born. This is our version of that infamous downtown Houston parking lot field shot.
