Residence at 347 Van Ness Avenue.

It's always fun when you find out a vintage home is still there (and this one's being repaired!)

I recently found two more photos of the Lewis House 1425 Miramar Street.

ebay

below: This is the first time that I've seen the back of the house. I'm surprised by the huge round window overlooking the backyard.

ebay

below: The photos are mislabeled on ebay. It even says the house is demolished. It isn't.

Here is the link to an earlier post on the Lewis House.

More Miramar

LAPL

The City View apartments at 1207 Miramar, on the easternmost fragment of the street. It's much bigger than I first realized:

e_r: The rooftop sign is gone, but the framework remains.

Hey guys...if we could go back to "This Gun For Hire" for a sec...I only saw it for the first time the other day as I mentioned, but I along with the railroad yard and the walking bridge, I also remember there were some shots of them by some large water tanks, and a factory of some kind? The big looming water tanks (I guess that's what they were) looked foreboding and fit the mood well...just wondered if the tanks were still there? Anyone know?

Thanks
Tom

I went to see Stimson House a few weeks ago, here are a few photos, taken through the fence. It's quite an amazing place.

BTW, sorry for being so quiet here lately. All my spare time has been devoted to preparations for a talk and slideshow I'm giving on L.A. history...with much material liberally stolen from this thread.

Opened 100 years ago this month, then addressed as 1207 West Third. Thanks for identifying it, Beaudry.

And what's an old downtown apartment building without some noir ingredients like carbolic acid and fire?

Only a few months after it opened...

And, "flash forwarding" to a less glamorous Huntley...
Los Angeles Times, 5-8-1978

After this fire, we're lucky that the Huntley still stands... even more true, considering what happened to a building of similar vintage around the corner in 1941:

The Francis House, Westchester County, New York

AMC

Great to see up-to-the-minute shots of the Stimson house, David. The super-high-quality, on-the-ground, "user-generated" shots we sometimes see here on the thread are always a treat. Yours reminded me to see if I could capture the Stimson as it appeared in Sunday night's season opener of Mad Men, where it briefly portrayed Betty and her new husband's house, probably meant to be somewhere in Westchester County. As I recall, Mr. Francis was supposed to be from a rich family, so I guess it makes sense that he would live in what was once L.A.'s finest house (and probably the most photographed). In the screenshots above, Don is dropping the kids off at home after a weekend visit to his new apartment in the city. ("Now, what kind of father drops his kids off down on Figueroa Street at night...?"). The Stimson is the kind of house all kids should get to grow up in--every kid should have a bedroom in a turret.

Thanks, e_r. I've been dying to go back, and my fiance has never been and has always wanted to go. This seemed like a good excuse.

Wow, thanks for identifying the house at 1040 Westlake Beaudry. I was afraid it was long gone.

Oh, and great photographs of the Stimson House David/3940dxer. Thanks for posting them.

1898-Harper Home and Groves, Hollywood, CA by ozfan22, on Flickr
Description from Flickr:
Panoramic view of the Charles Harper Victorian home and property, standing at the entrance to Laurel Canyon in Hollywood. A man, perhaps Charles Harper, stands in the foreground in 1898. Harper, a merchant, had a hardware store on Spring near Temple Streets.

Great image kanhawk! I didn't realize the Harper Ranch was located at the entrance to Laurel Canyon....very interesting.
This would be in the general vicinity of the original Schwab's drugstore.

below: Here is another view of Harper Ranch dated 1900. In this photo we're looking due east.

Schwab's Pharmacy at 8024 Sunset Boulevard at Crescents Heights. Obviously this is many years after the above photographs of the Harper Ranch.

I was in Glendale yesterday evening; driving past Armenian bakeries and banquet halls, and the corner of East Broadway and Maryland, I never would've guessed that what is now the Fortune Inn Chinese restaurant, was once a "Little Bob's," as in Bob's Big Boy, the restaurant chain that started in Glendale. Apparently after they opened the main restaurant, they also opened a smaller one. This was at 121 E. Broadway in downtown Glendale, some blocks west of the City Hall (which at night, looks very noirish, with its WPA-style architecture, at least the original building does, not the Glendale Civic Center's later additions).

From Vintage Los Angeles facebook

Was this the waning years of Glendale's era of being a Sundown Town?

This woman reeks of "Female Trouble." Dawn Davenport, anyone? The year, 1960. The location, 401 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale; it's actually Maureen Bollier of 1004 Cornell Drive, Glendale; she's receiving a Salk polio shot at a unique drive-in clinic that the Los Angeles County Medical Association set up at Glendale Federal Savings and Loan Association.

LAPL

Some music to go with it, also from 1960. It might sound familiar to some of you (being used in the film "Key Witness.")
