I hate to be this guy, but I liked the design better when the towers were far apart. I felt like they did a good job of highlighting the width of the Century Plaza Hotel.

That said, I always liked the view of the Century City skyline from the 405 / other parts of the Westside and I hope that this project adds to it in a good way.

I think asymmetry is more interesting architecturally. For example, in a 3 tower complex like this one, I would find 56-36-20 (the hotel) story towers more interesting than 46-46-20. ARCO Plaza downtown should have been a 3 tower complex (instead of 52 story twins), maybe 58-38-28, or 58-38-Richfield Tower (preserving the art deco masterpiece). Symmetry is overrated. Wells Fargo Plaza (originally Crocker Plaza) and California Plaza projects on Bunker Hill wisely designed buildings of different heights. WF buildings are 54-44; Cal Plaza 52-42 floors. Nice step effect.

But don't get me wrong, these 2 mirror image towers are fine, because they preserved the Century Plaza hotel, a mid century modern classic. The Century City condo twins will add to the imposing view of Century City from the 405. I believe they will be 600 feet tall, edging out the theme towers across the street in height.

Yes, I agree. The towers might have been better placed at the ends of the hotel rather than close together to accentuate the length of the hotel and height of the towers. A large pool could be placed in the middle, perhaps for shared use of the hotel visitors and condo residents. But what's done is done, and the towers are an improvement. Perfect should not be the enemy of the good.

are the towers on the opposite corner of the century plaza hotel (johnson fain designed towers) under construction now? it looks like site work is underway in the most recent pictures of this project.

No. The developer cleared the site not to long ago, and it is now sitting idle. I would expect something to start up next year, so long as there's not major shockwaves in the economy. Century City office vacancy rates are very low right now, so there would seem to be a nice opportunity.

Saw this project the other day, it is rising nicely.

On a side note; Does anyone know what the multitude of cranes are to the west side of UCLA? I think I saw 5-7 cranes...

There are quite a few UCLA dorm/housing projects going up at the moment. They were proposed recently and have gotten a quick start.

I thought that could be it, but it was the number of cranes that surprised me, two clusters....
thanks...

The window and balcony treatments make for some nice texture. I hope they do not become pigeon roosts.
