Austin Downtown 3D Paper Model

Come to think of it, as a skyscraper nerd like the rest of us, one of the coolest museums I've ever visited was in Shanghai - a huge room model of the downtown area that you could walk around. All paper/cardboard, I assume.

Maybe you should open one of those? Obviously include food trucks and craft beer and all of us will be there on a pretty healthy rotation.

If one day I am able to finish it and it looks pretty dope, maybe I could get it displayed at the Central Library for a bit. Just an idea.

Holy cow, I totally underestimated how small these are. That is some serious skill. Thank you so much for sharing, I can't wait to see what it looks like when done.

Thank you all! Yeah, they are quite small, because I want to be able to fit the whole downtown on a tabletop. Might have to be a large table though.

100 Congress came out quite a bit fatter than intended. I forgot to account for paper fold thickness when designing the shapes... I was almost done with putting it together when I realized that, and I don't want to redo it.

So yeah, I am hiding the fat lard behind the Ashton.

Thanks for indulging me with the props I gotta say with my arthritis and poor eyesight, I could never construct such small and amazing models like you. In fact, I couldn't do that at any size.

These are great. Also, I've always needed a visual of what a giant $1 bill would look like slicing across Congress Avenue.

I'm seriously blown away by how accurate these are. I've been staring at photos of Austin and geeking out over building elevations forever and these are seriously spot on.

Probably plexi and other plastic sheets. That is what most higher end models are made of. It is more durable and precise and you can better simulate the reflective quality of glass and metals that most high rises are clad with.

Thanks! I still stress over how much detail I have to cut. Maybe one day I can afford the $50k price tag of a full-color 3d printer...
