Good news, we have a very culturally diverse province. Flin Flon, haven't been up their in years, is a surprise in the rankings.

All-season road network taking shape

To date, about $85 million in tenders have been awarded and many projects are complete, or in process, on the aptly named Eastside Road.

The road is 156 kilometres long and will follow the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg, from Provincial Road 304 in the south to the Berens River First Nation Community in the north.

It will eventually connect northern communities to Manitoba’s existing network of all-season roads.

The entire initiative is expected to take about 30 years to complete at a total cost of about $3 billion.

Work continues. Project details @ Source

Thanks. That is very good to hear. We seem to well enriched with culture in this province. I would like to see an inclusive list of all of the provinces. That pdf states that Quebec and Alberta were not included.

Interesting numbers here. Looks like public sector employment went up 5% in the past year while private sector employment went down 1.4%.

5%, holy moly. so 8,000 employees over the last year. Does that include crown corporations? I'll assume so if there are a total of 167,000 employed by public sector in Manitoba.

Meanwhile, private sector lost 5,000 jobs over the last year.

Horrible. Only province in Western Canada with negative growth in the private sector. Only provinces worse than Manitoba are Quebec and a couple maritime provinces. Even Ontario managed some private growth. But I'm sure the NDP will tell us all the positive steps they have taken to attract private investment to the province come election time!

Licence issued for Keeyask dam construction
By: Larry Kusch

The Manitoba government has issued a licence to construct the Keeyask hydro generating project.

The 695-megawatt generating project, estimated to cost $6.5 billion, is proposed by the Keeyask Hydropower Limited Partnership -- a partnership between Manitoba Hydro, the Tataskweyak First Nation, the York Factory First Nation, the War Lake Cree Nation and the Fox Lake Cree Nation.

So be it. Like it or not.

We need power, and if you don't want coal or Nuclear you have got to have something. So Hydro it is. As Wind and Solar can't compete for price per MW as of current. Wind is closer in price but still likely not viable for a lot of places.

There are also combined cycle gas power plants that have very low emissions, can start and stop quickly, are quick to install and cost much less being far easier on the ratepayer.

Without question, although Manitoban's fear that the cheapest rates in the country will not remain so for much longer.

EDIT Add : My point made. ^

Those are good as well, however, as a sustainable way of generating energy water (hydro) still wins out. As cost fluctuations in gas prices could drive up cost/MW to a level where it could exceed Hydro. But that is speculative at best. However, still a variable that one must consider.

One might consider capturing heat from mechanical linkages in the hydro plant as a secondary means of heating water to create more power from the existing source... Viable maybe?

No.

Manitoba Hydro pays massive fees to government, a water tax if you will. Plus they are forced to borrow all monies for construction through the Manitoba government which is highly taxed as well.

The most recent dam built, Wuskwatim, is losing money due to low export prices, forcing our rates up. So ratepayers are subsidizing power sales to the USA.

I do believe we can blame Free-Trade for those low prices. Amazing how screwed we are when it comes to commodities

You can blame the new technologies that are used to extract copious amounts of natural gas. Gas is a far better and cheaper option to make electricity and the low spot market prices reflect that.
