Stockholm from above

In a blatant ripp-off of staff's thread (which in turn is bsed on a Gothenburg thread at SSC S&B) I'm doing a similar one for Stockholm.

Starting of with the suburban shots...
(All pics are from hitta.se)

1. Where it all began. The City that came before the city that came before Stockholm: Birka. Only city in Sweden at the time (Viking age), before Swēþiuð became Sverige. Not much left now, you can kinda make out where the City Wall was.

2. World's largest IKEA

3. Skogskyrkogården, a World Heretige site with it's own subway station - and thousands of dead people.

4. A few of the commieblocks in Tensta

5. 2km from Tensta - Kista in da housizzle!

6. Where some of the ferries to Finaland dock

7. The Globe Arena (and two more stadia), with its subway and LRT station

8. Sundbyberg, an older urban suburb

9. much of suburbia looks like this too.

Time for the Inner City

10. On the edge of the Inner City. Plans are to expand the urbanity all the way across the area in the pic.

11.Also on the edge, KTH (the Royal Institute of Technology) and the terminus for a narrow-guage suburban railway

12. Södersjukhuset aka SöS, the big hospital on Södermalm (Southside)

13. More Södermalm

14. Even more Södermalm, Medis to be exact.

15. Slussen, where Södermalm meets the Old Town

16. The Palace in the Old Town, the Riksdag on its own island and alot of other goverment buildings

17. plenty of water in the Inner City

18. Gröna Lund (the tivoli) and Skansen (open-air museum/zoo)

19. Östermalm (eastside)

20. Centralen, Sweden's main transit hub (inter-city rail, commuter rail, subways, inter-city busses & night-busses to the suburbs)

21. Odenplan (Odin square) a center up in the northern parts of the Inner City

22. Vasastan's (Vasa-town, named for the kings, not the finnish city) density is second to none in Sweden.

23. "City" as we call our downtown. Maybe it confuses english-speakers, but that's just part of the fun!

No huge over-view yet tho...

The market on Hötorget looks like a shanty town.

Interesting to compare Staff's Malmö thread with this one. Most striking is the difference in use of roof materials. Red tile in Mlamö and black metal in Stockholm.

@olga - but an orderd shantytown! It's only there during the day and goes away at night, so it is pretty shanty-esque.
The black metal roofs is, I gues like the red tiles in Malmö, just the way it is. Nothing we think about. Unless we go to a city that doesn't have 'em, then we're like "there's something off about this place, can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something..."
