I don't know anything about the Wild Planet building.
What happened to the original Clarendon Hotel?

I've seen photos of it and always wondered why the A&B Sound building was so much shorter.

I'm guessing the previous hotel burnt down?

It was an old Victorian building that looked dated compared to all the new buildings of the early 20th century. Also, the hotel trade had moved away from Portage Avenue. So the owner demolished it around the end of the First World War and built a smaller building (which had a fire soon after it was built, I believe, leading to a quick refurbishment in the very plain style we see today). The second building was not intended to be a hotel at all but after about a decade it became one under the same name as the previous hotel.

it was beautiful... they never thought of rebuilding it exactly the same? Rebuilding of destroyed historical buildings is very common especially in Europe, both historically after WWII for example (Warzaw, Dresden, etc.) and currently (Istanbul). I wonder why there is no such interest.

Look at what the rebuild in Istanbul from scratch, Ciraan Palace built in the second half of the XIX century

I suppose that would depend on if that is the parkade (the two tower)

and in between is just a connection & shorter parkade with the landscaped roof, and those towers are the taller portions of the parkade

I wouldn't get hyped and assume it is residential just yet, though it would be very welcome if it was. We know they were looking at a residential portion, but if it was for certain, then it would have been shown off too.

None of the media reports have pointed out the bldg's former life in the 1980s as home of Book Fair and Ab D Cards. Ah, many Marvel-ous memories were carved out at Book Fair. IIRC, its competition was just down the street in the Mitchell Copp storefront too, Comic World. Good times.

So they brought a backhoe out and started taking down the building. All that happened was a stratch on one side and call it a day?

For as exciting a prospect as two towers is , my guess is that they're just conceptual ideas and little more .
It only makes sense that they would try to maximize the profit-generating potential of the site . Nevertheless , whatever they're thinking of doing with those sites can only be represented in the most vague of ways . They're probably seeking investors of some sort to build something on those sites but until something is finalized they can only suggest potential possibilities .

Having said that , I sure hope they max-out if and when the time comes .

The little 'scratch' on the side must have just been for a photo-op then.
