2014 was a pretty good year for New York skyscrapers and especially supertalls. Hard to believe but 2015 will be even better!

To long to post. Many of the proposed projects will start this year, including over 7 supertalls. THe biggest change being the HY area, which will be a forest of cranes. Even more so than it is now.

Also, the waterfront along the East River will start to experience construction, especially on those large-scale residentials.

Ah yes, forgot about that one. We had some info a couple of weeks ago that 111W could end up taller. But all DOB filings show 1,397' now - so I guess that's the final height.

Crazy times!
The skyline is becoming immensely tall. Totally unthinkable just some two or three years ago! I just hope the Hudson Spire project will break the 1,400 foot mark too - that would be epic.

What's the status of 125 Greenwich street? I really want it to get built despite it's semi odd positioning on the skyline next to the WTC, but I still think it'll be a great addition.

Well Shvo bought the site back in June 2014 (for $240M). Then, in October an Indian billionaire invested $40M in the project. It's certainly a good sign. My guess is that Shvo is waiting for other rich investors to get the tower off the ground. We should hear some news till spring.

2014 Year in Review: Record Completion Total

At the beginning of each year The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat publishes a study and report (download PDF) that examines all 200m+ tall buildings that were completed during the previous year. Click the tabs below to see charts related to each topic. The charts and descriptions are interactive so you can click on them to view more information on The Skyscraper Center, our tall building database.

Note: Only countries with at least two completions in 2014 are included in this chart. One tall building 200m+ in height was also completed during 2014 in these countries: Chile, Kuwait, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Vietnam.

Once again, for the seventh year in a row, China completed the most 200-meter-plus buildings (58). This represents 60% of the global 2014 total, and a 61% increase over its previous record of 36 in 2013.

The Philippines took second place with five completions, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar share position three with four completions, and the United States, Japan, Indonesia and Canada tie for fourth, with three completions each.

Japan marked its first entry into the supertall stakes with the completion of the 300-meter Abeno Harukas in Osaka, becoming the country’s tallest building.

This was the "tallest year ever" by another measure: The sum of heights of all 200-meter-plus buildings completed across the globe in 2014 was 23,333 meters – setting another all-time record and breaking 2011’s previous record of 19,852 meters.

New York did well with 1WTC, 4WTC and One57, the rest of the U.S. not so much (not a single 200m+ building completed in 2014).

2016 should see the U.S. a little higher on that list. Once we factor in NYC, SF, and Miami; all of which are building 200m plus.

China though is stunning. Not even close if we add up the next 10 nations in terms of raw meters added up (200m plus).

Yes, 2016 more U.S. projects will be completed. For this year 432 PA will be the flagship (after Shanghai Tower). New York is in a league of its own.

This was a triumphant year for the United States, and particularly for New York. At 541 meters, One World Trade Center, New York, was the tallest building to complete in 2014 and is now the world’s third-tallest. The last time the United States completed a tallest building worldwide was in 2009, when Chicago’s 423-meter Trump International Hotel & Tower debuted. Its 298-meter New York neighbor, 4 World Trade Center, also joined the ranks as the 12th-tallest building to complete in 2014. The completions of these two structures are important milestones in a long and often tortuous rebuilding process after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Meanwhile, midtown New York marked the completion of One57, a 306-meter residential tower. All of these completions point toward a resurgent skyscraper city in New York, which is one of the reasons CTBUH will hold its 2015 conference there.

Looking at the pdf, I'd like to note that even though we are going through an era of supertall construction, it is still restricted or limited in its nature. Only a few cities out there have such towers. Its still an achievement to get one.

I'd be interesting to see a global map with maybe dots showing the location of supertalls based on the city. You will see that most of it concentrates in a few select cities. Probably fewer than 40.

1) The U.S. has 6 cities with supertalls. (will change with Miami making it 7 and possibly seattle, so 8).
2) Middle East has 7 cities with supertalls.

5) Australia has 1 ....
6) East Asia has too many and I'm lazy to count.
7) South America has 1 city.

I love this tower, but I can't imagine that anything over floor 79 will be usable residential space.
