Looks like montral has been allowed to decay. This is shocking, why has Canada let it's second biggest city fall into such a state while Toronto booms?

I know these are the bad areas, as I have been to montral myself. Still, it looks like west Philly.

What is wrong with the economy in Quebec?

When is the last time major development or investment happened in mtl?

canada didn't really let anything happen -- it's just a dirty old town i guess. that said, there are more big projects going on right now than anytime since montreal was no. 1... it's just, you know -- not in these areas. the condo buyers being sought by, say, the waldorf -- they have this presumed aversion to toothless dolls, pissed-on windows and abandoned shopping carts full of hair.

Toronto has plenty of abandoned factories, decaying buildings, graffiti, homeless people, and dirty streets too. So does just about every other successful city (New York, London, Paris, whatever). While some of these things are definitely undesirable (like homelessness and a loss of manufacturing jobs), they aren't necessarily indicative of a failed city or society.

Not much. Economic growth and unemployment in Quebec right now is about average for Canada, which is pretty good by international standards. The only real "issue" (at least, as seen in this thread) is the industrial decay...which is no different from any other developed country.

The level of construction in Montreal is unseen since Expo 67. There are investments worth more than 12 billions right now, more than 50 cranes operating and three 30 stories + towers under construction downtown for the first time since 1992 with many more to come soon.

I suggest you seek professional help......90% of photos were taken with a Nikon D80 with a 18-70mm lens both of which I no longer have,in fact I'm getting bored with photography in general ,all the time and effort I put in has been a dismal artistic and financial failure (I haven't made a bloody penny with any of photos)...anyhow enough with the whining let's continue the crapfest

I just want to learn French so I can really say I love mansard roofs and I am also from what was French North America and that I love Montreal and that I've come to see the old capital.

Actually I happen to think that abandoned factories, decaying buildings, graffiti, homeless people and dirty streets are directly indicative of a failed society.

And just because most cities have these doesn't make it any less of a failure.

I could easily go out and take photos of Toronto that make it look just as bad.

^ Exactly my point...Great photography IMO..Catching the grit and dark side which every major city has. A city just wouldn't have moxy and character without ole scars and this side of it...You can easily catch the "ying" of Montreal, but he brilliantly chose the "Yang".

^Who said anything about sterile or alien? If people can't see that there is a problem with homelessness, decay, dirty streets and blight, then you've been inured to the suffering by the ridiculous "glamour of grit." Well there's nothing glamorous about suffering, and there's nothing glamorous about ugliness.

You can create some sort of bizarre internal narrative about the "nobility" of great things long past, but for people who have to live in surroundings as depicted here, I'd say look into their eyes and tell me that they are are enamored with it.

Damn right! I'm shocked that anyone could be romanticizing such deplorable conditions. Montreal has some work to do to revitalize its old industrial areas. Right now it looks like Pittsburgh or Cleveland in places, let alone the second largest Canadian city!!!
