Montreal, seen from Saint-Lambert before the Saint Lawrence Seaway was built (not sure the exact year, but sometime in the early 1950s, I would assume).

From near the same location around 1963, after the seaway was built (and before Route 132 was transformed into a highway in 1965).

And today we commemorated the 100th anniversary:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=2907

In his letters to the British Parliament, our Governor (equivalent of Canada's Governor General) said our Prime Minister was ready to sink two ships and block the Narrows to protect the city from the Dresden, and that every man, woman, and child was ready to fight should it go any further here. Basically just telling them not to worry about us, which is a cute sentiment, however unnecessary.

Newfoundlanders really like parades celebrating war, perhaps a bit too much.

There's only... four annual ones, I believe. Not so bad.

Mostly for tragic losses, aren't they?

Well, Memorial Day especially, as you certainly know. That one is depressing, and rightfully so - and a very significant loss. Armistice/Remembrance Day is equally solemn and serious, but it doesn't have an equivalent of Beaumont Hamel for us so it's not quite as... dark. Also, there's a strong focus on living veterans to lift spirits at least a little.

Battle of Britain Day is probably the most upbeat. But also the smallest of the big ones.

It's an extremely exciting prospect for sure If any one of the three major pipeline proposals go through... brace yourself

I saw you had the most recent post, started scrolling from the bottom up and thought: VERY impressive. Looks like Winnipeg did back then. Assumed it was Calgary until I read.

Interesting to see that Banque D'Hochelaga sign on the building in Winnipeg in 1910. In French no less!

What's more amazing is that I would dare say that easily more than half of the structures in what would be the downtown core (north of 9th ave) in that picture do not exist any more - they've been razed to accommodate newer structures.
