Now Brantford is known for four things:
1. Bell
2. Gretzky
3. The place where ALL Tim Hortons donuts are parbaked
4. The city that destroys its urban heart

Canada has plenty of senseless destruction. See downtown Hamilton, just 20 minutes down the highway from Brantford. It's about 80% parking lots. Or my hometown, Wallaceburg, Ontario, where almost the entire southside neighbourhood where I grew up is empty lots.

Okay well, I should recalibrate my statement to be prefaced with something along the lines of as compared with a lot of the U.S.

Somebody should post pictures of this street after demolition.

Funny, I always assumed Canada was somehow different from us. This thread convinced me that Canada is, in fact, exactly the same as the U.S. Really, you ought to just become states. We should annex you. This thread is all the justification I need - you are Americans who just happen to talk a little funny.

i was a little curious myself; the south side of colborne st between brant/icomm and market st is what was torn down, and google street view just shows grass, some baby trees and a parking deck in the distance. i'm just kind of scratching my head that the city council was so adamant about it.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=brant...123.69,,0,1.93

they haven't updated the aerial imagery yet, so it looks like the blocks are still intact from above.

Nothing happened with it. It's still an empty lot. There have been a couple building renovations around the area but that's not outside of what other cities have experienced without demolishing entire rows of buildings.

They wanted to build something there a while back but the government wouldn't give them any money for it so it was cancelled.

It's crazy to think that the street used to be a 'canyon'...

https://www.google.com/maps/preview/...TQCo0s4gRg!2e0

Any plans to destroy the north side of the street too? That would kick downtown revitalization into high gear.

Well, now I understand the whole thing! That is a STUNNING trash can they've put there. Easily the most handsome trash can between Woodstock and Hamilton. I'm sure the tourists will be flocking there any day now.

I thought this was something that only my grandparents' stupid generation did, because they grew up in the Depression and didn't know any better?

Just shows how far behind the Times brantford is.

It used to be one of my favorite cities to explore, but now I have no desire whatsoever to go there.

If this were my hometown, they would have had to arrest me or shoot me because there's no way I would have gotten out of the way.

About 55 years behind the times... When I saw this, I immediately thought "damn, they did a Brantford on the south side of the street, what a shame". To my knowledge though no other city on this continent would do that in the 2010s.

IMO they deserve this thread to be kept alive and bumped up once in a while so the city can be the laughing stock of the worldwide urbanistic community (at least the part of it who reads this forum)...
