Istanbul: the city that never ends

My fourth trip to this amazing city, and I'm still in awe of its size and the intensity of its human crush. Enjoy the pics!

It's definitely on my list.

Looking at it in the winter, I can definitely see why Orhan Pamuk wrote that, when he was a kid, he pictured the Mediterranean as a world apart from grey, chilly Istanbul.

Yeah, Istanbul in the winter definitely takes on a grey, melancholic air, a world away from its summers full of Mediterranean sun and colours. In a strange way, though, it really suits the city and its architecture, and makes you want to huddle up with a çay on the ferry and watch the world go by.

My wife (who is Turkish) said the winters used to be much worse when coal and charcoal were the primary heating fuels - a pall of smoke would hang over the city for months.

For my part, I've always found Istanbul's air quality to be remarkably good for a rapidly growing metro area of 15 million + who knows how many more, especially when compared to similarly sized cities in East Asia.

Very atmospheric for it too.

Only got to spend 2 days there and I left wanting so, so much more. That seems to be pretty much everyone's takeaway from Istanbul. Incredible city. Dying to go back.

I think of this as an eastern city, but it looks so westernized, and a bit of a mish mash.
Great photos though, and still a place I would love to visit.

Great photos. I've always been intrigued by Istanbul, and really hope to make it there some day.

^ Same here!

Looks huge, dense, and infinitely complex. All the things I love in a city.
