Yeah, Istanbul in the winter definitely takes on a grey, melancholic air, a world away from its summers full of Mediterranean sun and colours. In a strange way, though, it really suits the city and its architecture, and makes you want to huddle up with a çay on the ferry and watch the world go by.
My wife (who is Turkish) said the winters used to be much worse when coal and charcoal were the primary heating fuels - a pall of smoke would hang over the city for months.
For my part, I've always found Istanbul's air quality to be remarkably good for a rapidly growing metro area of 15 million + who knows how many more, especially when compared to similarly sized cities in East Asia.
