I don't think so, I think that most of the city center has been spared by destruction during WWII.
There are obviously modern buildings (not necessarily due to the war destruction) and a few blocks seems to be missing in the center but nothing in comparison with the level of destruction of main German cities.

According what I read, it is area behind the train station that has been the most heavily hit.

I love when someone tells me I have to check something out and it's an SSP link. Beautiful shots and very interesting architecture.

mm, possibly something distinctive of some local quarries. I find that yellow color warmer than what you usually find in much of the country. For example, the other large town of Lorraine, Nancy mostly shows the usual pale stone found in Paris, Bordeaux and elsewhere. Like some of what you're showing of Strasbourg on these pictures. I think you'd be pleased at the bit of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture in Nancy by the way.

While the Alsatian economy remains healthy, currently one of the most vibrant in the country, Lorraine has been struggling from the loss of older industries. Their situation in that respect is much like that of the northern most French-speaking regions at the moment, Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France and Wallonia on the other side of the border to Belgium. We've often been too static, to be honest. It's been a huge awkward mistake to try keep up older industries instead of further developing some new and more advanced ones. There's no actual disaster however, but I think people in Lorraine are worried about future for now, cause a bunch of their smaller towns suffered from relocations and deindustrialization.

yep -- thankfully that seems to be the case based on war photos as well:

Strasbourg looks beautiful.

How did Strasbourg remain so attractive despite the massive WW2 bombing and rebuilding? Perhaps the French rebuilt their cities much better than the Germans? To be fair, Germany had like 100x more damage, but still, it's amazing to compare Strasbourg to Mannheim and Stuttgart, the closest major German cities. Mannheim's city center is pretty awful in terms of architecture.

My guess is that Strasbourg definitely didn't suffer damage on a scale similar to that of adjacent "proper" German cities. I mean the allies knew that the place would eventually be returned to the French so I think they refrained from extending the bombing campaigns that hit the German heartland to areas merely occupied by Germany.
