Bozzani Motors has been at the NW intersection of Broadway and Sunset for many years and was next door to one of the last remaining adobe houses of Sonoratown that was demolished in the late 50's. The area now is being redeveloped as high rise apartment houses which obstructs the view of Elysian Park from that intersection.

Was Tom Mix a midget or is this just a huge car?

Fame came quickly to Mix after his first film in 1910. By the 20s, he was making $7,500 per week in films, and had overseen the construction several Western film sets called “Mixvilles” around Southern California, including one in downtown Newhall. http://deadwrite.wordpress.com/2010/...gotten-cowboy/

I believe this is the TM brand (circled in red above) that appeared in the tread of his tires.

Here it is again, between the dates on his headstone at Forest Lawn in Glendale.

Here is a very early image of a young Tom Mix in 1909.

http://www.okhistory.org/research/index

Located in the Oklahoma Territory, Ranch 101 was the largest in the country at that time.
This is where he honed all his western skills.....roping....shooting. etc.
He was 'discovered' by the Selig-Polyscope Co. when they arrived in the territory to make western movies.

The interesting thing about this postcard is that it was made a year prior to his first movie, -Ranch Life in the Southwest' (1910).

To see Tom Mix (or his double) jump over Beale's Cut outside of Newhall go here.

..per our recent discussion about the Arcade Depot Palm, I thought it might be interesting to briefly revisit the station, especially the magnificent train shed that appears behind the palm in the photograph above.

Myth v Reality?

http://imageshack.us/a/img18/470/sth...ead1923tom.jpg

The horse in the Mix three-reeler looks mighty small considering some of the other photos of the Cut. Whatever it's size, jumping even a smaller gap was probably no small feat!
Interesting article suggests Beale's Cut's depth has varied over the years from '30 (1854) to '90 feet, and in the words of the author (below), "the still photo was doctored." Having never visited the famous cut, I can't say what reaction I might have, disappointment, awe or a little of both.

Quote:
It is important to note that there were at least three different trailers for "Three Jumps Ahead," all shot at different times and all showing Beale's Cut. At least one version, seen in most still images, is a photographically produced composite, but the others could have been real jumps. The only thing that's agreed upon for sure is that Tom Mix and Tony never jumped over Beale's Cut.

I didn't realize there were escalators in Pershing Squares as early as this.

ebay

As most of you already know, the building on the left (with the Temple Baptist Church sign) is the remodeled Auditorium Building.

View across Pershing Square showing the same buildings in 1973.

I didn't realize street vendors were allowed on the periphery of Pershing Square.

Thanks for the information unihikid! So maybe this dapper young man is a musician or singer.

I hope you and your camera can gain entry.
