I think originally it was just concrete masquerading as stone. The present scheme would not be my first choice, but it looks very cared for, ditto the landscaping and railing. (if it had to be painted, I would have gone with a nice putty color with the trim picked out in cream. Don't understand the missing windows. There's some trim missing at the parapet too.)

Looks like flattened cardboard cartons.

I'm guessing cushions for folding chairs. There are tie cords dangling from some of them.

In the USO photo, the two individuals standing appear to be wearing some variant of an RAF enlisted man's uniform. Their caps, however, seem unusual, as does the (illegible) arm patch on the gent to the left.

I think, in the photo directly above, the stand is about where the Clocktower Courthouse used to be, with the southern-most building of the Temple block in the background or, maybe, farther south by a few buildings.

LAPL has 8 or 10 pix taken that day (the buildings on the left, below, were on the west side of Spring St before realignment of Spring):

USCDL has some construction photos. The back of the northernmost building of the Temple Block is in the lower-right-hand corner of the image below. Angled Spring St, and all its buildings, except the International Bank Building/Bank of Italy, are gone:

Excellent post tovanger2 the Bisbee Inn building and the Higgins Building.

I tweaked the photo below in order to see that unique sign over the entrance a bit better.

I recently came across this 1925 ad for the "Ambassador Poultry Show".

Did the Ambassador Hotel ever have a stand-alone Auditorium as shown in the above illustration?

(I wonder if it was later incorporated into the hotel design to become one of it's ballrooms?) -that's only a guess mind you.

I visited the St. George not too long ago on one of the last times I was downtown. I went all around it, behind the building (of course. Not recommended. Things may be seen that can’t be unseen) then infiltrated it through the back door left open by a worker carrying a mattress out to be disposed of (don’t even want to know why they were getting rid of it). The ground level anyway is totally modernized and un-noirish. It looks like the windows are original on the upper floors so maybe more of interest there but I couldn’t find service stairs and couldn’t get to the elevator without being seen by the desk clerks. They were completely freaked out by my being there. Maybe at the end of a long day visiting downtown buildings in the heat I do look like a crazed crack addict, but it seemed an extreme over reaction. And I’d already removed my newly-acquired Joel McCrea Ranch baseball cap so not to resemble a female uni-bomber. I thought they were going to call the police so I left.

The street lobby is the only thing I saw downstairs that had any charm.

I'd photographed the west side earlier in the morning on my way to infiltrate the Rosslyn. That corner of 3rd and Main is so altered it’s hard to reconcile that it’s the same place.

how you'd have seen it from Angel's Flight after the 3rd St. jog cut. photo originally from this site I'm sure.

The Hotel Grey had to go for the 3rd St. jog removal. c.1905. usc.

the alley was still nice & noirish.

the windows behind the building. It looks like a service stairwell but if so I couldn't see how to get to it from inside.

I believe those are Canadian uniforms. They wore several designs of beret/Tam O'Shanter.

I bet those tall, skinny windows on the back of the St. George were once doors like the ones on the east side in the historic photo. I hope the back ones had a real fire escape, not the suicide balconies one sees on the east in the old photo:

Thanks! I'm going with chair pads on those things.

Having just told you a few pages ago I didn't think my grandfather ever went to the USO when he was in town, I must say that sitting sailor does look a lot like him. I had to do a double take there at first.
