Kalamazoo has a few -
  • "The Zoo" and "Zoo City" are most common (other variations on this are "Kazoo", "K'Zoo" and "KZO" - but these are less common)
  • "Beer City" is thrown around a lot these days. But other cities (even within Michigan) are arguably more deserving (like Grand Rapids).
  • You still hear "Mall City" once in a while - Kalamazoo claims to be home to the first modern outdoor pedestrian mall in the country, designed by Victor Gruen.
  • "Celery City" and "Paper City" - referring to two historic local industries, mostly gone - rarely used in common parlance anymore.
  • "Bedding Plant Capitol of the World" - due to all of the greenhouses - really rolls off the tongue!

Dayton is the Gem City - no one is really certain where it came from. It's also known as the Birthplace of Aviation, but that often applies to the whole state as well.

Cities I've lived in (while self-aware):

Decatur, AL
River City
D-rock
D-town
Dick hater
Heart of the (Tennessee) Valley
The Chicago of the South (don't ask me why)

Tuscaloosa
T-town
Druid City
Title town
Queen City
- This one I'm unsure about. There is a Queen City Ave in Tuscaloosa and I'm not sure if it is named after Tuscaloosa or named after the route to Selma (Queen City of the Black Belt) that it follows.

Birmingham
Magic City
B'ham
The Ham
Pittsburgh of the South
Steel City
Iron City

Buffalo
Queen City (full name Queen City of the Lakes)
City of Good Neighbors
Nickel City
City of No Illusions
City of Light (late 19th early 20th century, due to Niagara Falls power)
The 716
The Buff (never heard from locals, heard from out of town college students, I always hated this name)

Interesting that there are so many cities that refer to themselves as the Queen City. Trivia for those unfamiliar, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) connects two Queen Cities, Buffalo and Toronto. (More trivia is that it was named after the Queen Mother, not QE1 or QE2, and was the first intercity divided highway built in North America.)

Philadelphia has some good ones, including some that have already been mentioned:

-Philly

-Illadelph

-City of Brotherly Love

-The Birthplace of America

-The Cradle of Liberty

-The Quaker City

-The City That Loves You Back

-The Athens of America - So called as early as 1733 by the directors of the Library Company of Philadelphia. Gilbert Stuart referred to the city using this phrase, referring to Philadelphia's reputation for science, industry, art, and intellectual life

-Green Country Towne - for history lovers, William Penn wanted Philly to be a green country town full of 3 story buildings and parks. In a lot of sections of the city, his wish is still true to this day, with height limits of 3 or 4 stories, and a lot of "parks" or "squares" throughout the city.

Some less than flattering ones:

-Filthadelphia

-Killadelphia - because of Philly's high homicide rate

-The City That Bombed Itself - In 1985, Philadelphia police bombed a rowhouse occupied by MOVE, a radical black-power group. The bombing killed 11 people, destroyed 61 homes, left 250 people homeless, and earned the city this title

-The Sixth Borough - a reference due to Philadelphia's close proximity to New York City and the movement of New York residents to Philadelphia for various reasons, including lower rent prices and generally lower cost of living
