the zig-zag building with the orange stripes survived until about 10 years ago. The site, including its parking lot, is now tongva park. Note where hot dog on a sticks is labeled below. Their red and white sign, which just says "hot dog stick", can be seen behind the head of the man with the red headband in e_r's picture. It still looks the same today.

These shots are good yet beg for a reference to the somewhat hidden McClure Tunnel.

Thank again Hoss!

So I imagine the Annandale-Rockdale service station might have been where the R in Rockdale is on your map.

Or more precisely, the blue dot below.

Is that 'Puppy Peak' or 'Poppy Peak'on the map?
(I just noticed there's a 'Poppy Place', so I'm guessing Poppy, not Puppy, Peak is correct) -tongue twister!

The black square with the flag on Poppy Peak denotes a school house, right?
Well guess what, there's still a school there....Annandale Elementary School.

*I just spent the better part of the afternoon looking for a photograph of the original school on Poppy Peak Drive, but I didn't have any luck.

One last look at Sam Drucker and his gas station.

Here are some of the images from Julius Shulman's "Job 4709: Wurdeman & Becket, Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company Building (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1971". The set contains a mixture of color and black & white photos, nearly all of which are long shots. I've picked a selection, starting in color.

Now the black & white pictures.

In the distance, to the right of Mutual Benefit Life building, is the California Federal tower. In the foreground to the right of that is a corner of 724 South Genesee Avenue which we discussed in March.

This is the only shot looking away from the building. It shows part of the LACMA across Wilshire.

All from Getty Research Institute

Today, 5900 Wilshire Boulevard looks very like it did 45 years ago. Since 2014, the name of nightclub owner SBE has been on the top. You can read a bit about their leasing of the building in this LA Times article.

Yesterday I briefly mentioned Ann Corio.

Florentine Gardens, Los Angeles

old file

Ann Corio made her way to Los Angeles in 1940.
Between 1941 and 1944 she appeared in several Hollywood "B" motion pictures which featured her in scanty costumes beginning
with 'Swamp Woman' (1941), the best known of which was perhaps 1942’s 'Jungle Siren' opposite Buster Crabbe.
In 1944 she made 'Call of the Jungle' and 'Swamp Girl'."

I found a few photographs of Ms. Corio before she made her way out to the west coast.

Here she is looking a bit more refined out in Hollywood.

"Downtown Los Angeles, 1972"

eBay

-note the glass 'prisms' embedded in the sidewalk to let light into the basements.
If I remember correctly, we first talked about them in the early days of the thread.

Do these underground spaces that extend beyond the building show up on baist maps?
I know of one here in Lafayette that's a recording studio.

Very cool....it still has the three little 'portholes'.

It's too bad the older home is gone. It looked noirish with the liquor store built on in front of it.

Note the large flue...perhaps the place served food as well

I just noticed the poster for 'Husbands' starring Cassevettes, Gazzara & Falk.

Best I could find was this pair of amateur snapshots they have up on the Annandale Elementary website:

Their web page on school history mentions their original location was at Figueroa and Ruby, but that it was a small two room building with a bungalow added later, and that was around the 1900-1910 timeframe. No mention of when they moved to the current site, nor any mention of the original brick building. If I had to guess though, I'd say the "Annandale Boulevard School" building pictured above was built in the 1920's during the big population boom. I checked our LAUSD facilities web site, and I can't find any construction information on the current school building, though it looks to be roughly 40's/50's vintage. Perhaps the original brick building was irreparably damaged by the 1933 Long Beach earthquake? Seems a bit far...

Thank so much for your help jbange!

This amazing photograph from the 1920s shows the intersection of Alumni Avenue and York Blvd.

They were shelling out for construction in 1924-1928:

Not to beat a dead horse, but....

Here's Dave Barham, founder of Hot Dog on a Stick, posing in a stand with his frozen variety. (he has the same haircut that my Dad had)

http://hdoskorea.wix.com/hdoskorea?_...cjg9/image_tyb

I haven't much info on the photo because the web-site (where I found this image) is in Korean!

Here is an image from March 28, 1964.

Using my awesome powers of deduction I've decided these people have just visited 'Hotdog on a Stick'.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/huffst...7624301917226/

and here's another, also from 1964. (H.D.O.A.S. visible at far right)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/819188...7624301917226/

The building on the hill is the same one that is visible in the Mitch Epstein photo.

and finally, a sunny image from 'My Jetsetter Life' blog.

While we're in the Santa Monica area....

I thought this was interesting.

"The Cheetah Club next to Pacific Ocean Park on the pier."

Is the building that once housed the Cheetah Club still standing? Looking at aerials, I can't quite figure out where it was located exactly.

There isn't much information, but this is where I found the above photo.

Thanks for this link, jbange. It's not the worst interactive format I've ever used, but the animation and sound effects are unnecessary - at least you can turn off the latter. I guess it's just another site that was much better before it was "improved" for tablet and phone users. My main gripe is that whoever did the Google Earth images for the "now" shots has used distorted overhead views. They would have been so much better if they were angled views with 3D buildings so that a proper comparison could be made. Nevertheless, I'll be taking a longer look at them over the weekend, and maybe trying a few "now" pictures for myself. It's sad to see how many of the 1920s and 30s building have been replaced - some were pretty impressive.

Salpytalian and HossC,

I haven't found any photographs of the elusive Toddle House, but this matchbook I recently found includes an illustration of the place.

ebay

It would have set directly on the west bank of Ballona Creek.

You can see Ballona Creek in the screengrab below. The new building that is situated on the old Toddle House site is the Culver City Arts Center.
CityBoyDoug showed us the Culver City arts Center in an earlier post. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=18728

I just happened upon this thread after discovering the pictured newspaper clipping and wondering if anyone knew more about this establishment. The clipping was found in some newspaper that my grandfather had wrapped around some glassware... dated Jan 31st, 1950. The artwork is a total crack up.

Hope this kicks off some more discussion. Also, this is my first post here - Apologies for any missteps in posting etiquette.

After literally days of having a nearly functioning website, Photobucket is once again refusing show my images at full size. I'll restore them to their true size if Photobucket ever fix their problems! Images restored to fill size.

When I Googled Poppy Peak Drive, I found that there's a Richard Neutra designed house at 1540. When I found that there was a Richard Neutra designed house there, I wondered if Julius Shulman had ever photographed it - he did! This is "Job 2332: Perkins House (Pasadena, Calif.), 1957". The house is in the eastern part of Poppy Peak Drive, which is not directly connected to the western portion where you'll find the Annandale Elementary School.

The house is almost on the street, and has the covered area on the left instead of garages.

The set also contains some color images. This one shows the large glass walls and the pond which goes from inside to outside.

From the view of earth through the window, I'm guessing that this is at the back of the house.

Lots of six-pointed stars in this hanging decoration.

A look at the living area in color.

And finally, here's the view from the garden. The set also has a few extra images, most of which were taken at night.

All from Getty Research Institute

Today, the house would be easy to miss if you didn't know it was there.
