56 W Huron is a high rise, it just doesn't have a tower crane.

My mistake; my memory had it at 11 floors.

Irrespective of that, the fretting over this-thread-or-that borders on useless pedantry...

Could not agree more. It's like we are talking about 69 floors vs 0. If it were 69 floors, then I get why people would be annoyed. But it's not 69 floors...it's 11.

Wow, those projectors are insane! I've used some big projectors, for auditoriums but these look like dinosaurs compared to what I've used. And the cooling exhaust system is ridiculous! I know the bulbs put out a lot of heat, but maybe they could be water cooled like a CPU system, instead a building an entire exhaust system! The projectors I've used just have a fan to blow the air out of the enclosure.

I wonder what kind of blubs these use!

Big blubs. Expensive blubs.

Seriously though, I am surprised with LED tech taking over that such a massive cooling infrastructure would even be necessary.

^ LEDs still produce quite a bit of heat for their size, just not compared to the light the throwm off. In other words, the LED is a tiny little chip and while it's like 95% efficient compared to 20% for incandescent, that 5% of heat waste is produced in a very small space. So the main enemy of the LED is ironically still heat. You can actually tell a nice LED bulb from a cheap one based on how extensive of a heat sink it has. The cheap ones they produce now might only last 5, 10, or 15 years instead of 30 simply because the heat slowly degrades the electronics. I'm installing big commercial LED fixtures on the outside of my building and the entire shell is a giant cast aluminum heat sink. That's what you want if you want a long lasting high powered LED. Sure you can skimp and buy one that will still be efficient, but may suffer a shorter lifespan because they cheaped out on the heat sink. So I imagine when you are talking powerful enough to light up the entire merch Mart, there's probably enough heat there to just melt the soldering if you don't properly cool it.

Those projectors are going to be insane. There is supposed to be 32 of them, so 8 arrays of the 4 you see in that diagram.

Is it true it's not going to start projecting until the fall?

I was in the west loop last night and the change in that area is amazing. We could use an el stop between Morgan and Lake to really blow out that westward expansion.

There is a Green Line stop planned for Damen and Lake. Construction is supposed to start later this year and finish sometime in 2020. Personally I think there should be a Pink Line stop at Madison and Paulina though.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the huge project going on along Clark just north of Armitage? I've been trying to walk home from the loop to Wrigley every night for exercise and I keep walking by it. It's a near block long development, from Clark over to Orleans. They saved part of a façade on Clark and an entire façade on Orleans and then are incorporating a lot of vacant land as well. The entire thing horseshoes around an existing building along Clark. It looks to be 4-5 floors, winds all over the place, probably dozens of units.

Edit: here it is, I somehow missed this one and it actually looks quite unique. 10 high end condos, but they're keeping the previous building facades in place. They aren't using the facades, but they're just going to stand alone open to the air, to almost act as a "fence" hiding the new building behind. It's very large in person.

With all the "Eleven" buildings all I can think of is ... that extra push.

I really hate that. It's like they are making a facade graveyard, and saying look we have no idea how to make buildings like this so will just leave up these tombstones up as a reminder, when better developers used to build high quality good looking buildings. Since, we can't and wont.
It's not that hard to make buildings with classical proportions today, its just basic design sense using bricks and concrete. It's not even expensive materials. You can get super cheap resin ornament to even make it look very ornate.
