I just did a quick research on 400m+ towers, and I was quite surprised. About 20 cities in China (will) have taller towers than New York & Chicago in the works, that's nuts. Some of those cities are just regional hubs ... see for yourself:
- Changsha: Sky City, 2749ft (838m), in prep
- Suzhou: Suzhou Zhongnan Center, 2297ft (700m+), in prep
- Shenzhen: Ping An Finance Center, 2165ft (660m), u/c
- Wuhan: Wuhan Greenland Center, 2087ft (636m), u/c
- Shanghai: Shanghai Tower, 2073ft (632m), u/c
- Tianjin: Goldin Finance 117, 1957ft (597m), u/c
- Shenyang: Pearl of the North, 1854ft (565m), in prep
- Jinan: The Evergrande International Finance Center, 1837ft (560m), in prep
- Guangzhou: The CTF Guangzhou, 1739ft (530m), u/c
- Beijing: Zhongguo Zun, 1732ft (528m), u/c
- Dalian: Dalian Greenland Center, 1699ft (518m), in prep
- Zhuhai: Hengqin Headquarters Tower 2, 1608ft (490m), in prep
- Hong Kong: International Commerce Centre, 1588ft (484m), completed
- Chongqing: Chongqing International Financial Center, 1542ft (470m), in prep
- Chengdu: Greenland Center, 1535ft (468m), in prep
- Ningbo: ARA City Light, 1493ft (455m), in prep
- Haikou: Hainan International Exchange Square. 1483ft (452m), in prep
- Nanjing: Zifeng Tower, 1476ft (450m), completed
And don't get me started on the proposed / approved ones ... the list would be tl/dr.
So compared to Chinese cities it's clear that New York skyscrapers still lack in height. I'm not saying it's a competition here (Western cities don't really have the need) but it would be awesome to have at least a solid 500m+ tower in the city.
