You're right though, 17th ave still needs love between 11-14th st.
It's not as booming. Maybe because there's too much retail spaces that are closed after 9PM that creates a huge gap in-between bars.

The activities are closer from National to that park, with only one-two stores closed. Once you pass 11th, the gaps get bigger.

I think Analog is a good spot to people watch/listen to cool cars and motorcycles roar by.

I lived off that stretch (on the LMR side, which I think is better for this stretch of 17th) for the last year. Spots that need work:

- ATB and adjoining parking lot at 10St (dead zone)
- Half-decent landscaping/sidewalk from the liquor store down to the gate/board-thing (eyesore)
- Strip mall on north side of 11st (eyesore, attract vagrants)
- Empty lot on south side of 11st (dead zone)
- Sleep Country, Jewelry Store, and CIBC (triple dead zone)
- KFC, Wendy's and adjoining parking (eyesores, attract vagrants)
- Telus utility building (dead zone)

Oddly enough, I don't have as many problems with the McDicks (on the fast food side) or the Scotiabank (on the dead zone/eyesore side), if only because they seem to be slightly better on all accounts.

It also seems really weird to me to complain about 1410 and Morgans, or hell -- even the Pint. I've never experienced problems with their patrons, noise, or anything (note: this does NOT count as an endorsement of the Pint).

Is it just me or is Rick Bell a terrible writer? a 4 year old with a crayon could write better than him.

17th is fine the way it is, we don't need to enact any bylaws so that arts and craft stores and small galleries can stay on the street. 17th is becoming a dining and entertainment street and that's just fine! if you want to open other stores, there are plenty of other streets that would happily have them. Electric Ave is dead and it isn't coming back, people need to stop trying to make 17th out to be the same because it just isn't.

I don't know why you would say that about him.

There's not necessarily anything about his writing per se that is bad.

It's just that he makes every sentence a paragraph.

12st to 16st is pretty well built up now and spilling over onto 14st SW.

I would say 10 st - 12 st needs help. There has been a few redevelopments and renos in that area lately but that liquor depot, plus ATB, plus a couple remaining strip malls need to go. Perfect sites for mixed-use mid-rise and high-rises...

That parking lot housing the Liquor Depot needs to go. I hope someone develops something there.

And 17th is stretching nicely in the other direction as well. Cleaver (between Ox and Angela and Local 510 between 5th and 4th streets is another late night restuarant. That plus Anju on 17th and 4th adds another ~100-200 restaurant seats within an already loaded block. Great to see.

The retail on 4th and 17th is finishing and will soon be leasable which should open up more opportunities. Not to mention that small retail / condo project a bit further towards stampede at 17th and Centre. The pieces are coming together.

My dream is to open a bar here, with a nice big patio spot instead of the parking lot. The excellent warm bricks and sun exposure are prime for a patio, as the Park sales centre is perfect for a small bar.

I will complete this street myself if I have to .

That's a good spot and it seems like the restaurant establishments are done/owned by RAD(?)

Isn't the building beside it an abandoned crematorium? Also further down, more development is happening close to the casino!

Really most of the worst are gone.
17th has improved, but there's a few places that need to go. Morgan's being the prime suspect. That place is a pit and has been a pit for decades. I was there for the first time in ages. At first I thought it had turned into a hipster place, where hipsters have now embraced 1987's style, but alas it was just their loser clientele spending the last of their pogey.

Watchman's is another place that needs to go. It's not a pit, but 1412 can get a bit rowdy and tends to over serve their patrons. Jameson's should lose their license for over serving and over beating their clientele. I couldn't believe that the manager had no issue with their bouncers laying a beating on that guy. He implied that the guy deserved it. Sure he was an asshole and he punched a bouncer, but that doesn't give you a license to stave his face in.

He sometimes writes multiple sentence paragraphs.

He sometimes writes something reasonable.

This only happens when he quotes someone else.

Looks like another club has just opened on 10th Av, this one called Bespoke.

I'd say 10th has the largest concentration of clubs and larger bars in the city now, with lots of commercial and residential development coming to this strip. What is city council going to do!? Lol

Had a couple pints at the Unicorn last night, really sad that place is shutting down. Next Friday (15th) is the last day apparently.

That sucks. We keep loosing these character places for shiny wood "pubs" with $15 burgers and $9 pints. Once they are gone, there is no going back.

Yup and they are going to butcher that building in the process.

The Bear and Kilt may take over as the best character pub on Stephen Ave now.

The pub is ok, but their food isn't great. They are trying too hard to move away from typical pub food and it isn't working.

I wholeheartedly agree with you there. My friend ordered the risotto and it came out looking like soup. Obviously don't bother with any Asian cuisine here. But their burger isn't too bad, and the cheap beers more than make up for it.

On 30 May, the Calgary Gooners will be watching their beloved Gunners in the final of football's/soccer's oldest cup competition, the FA Cup. In last year’s final, the Arsenal overcame a 2-0 deficit to win their eleventh FA Cup much to the delight of the boisterous standing room only crowd at the Pig & Duke (Connaught).

If you don't care for the footy, there will also be loads of beer and bacon! Wear yellow, bring your singing voice and arrive early as though the match starts at 10:30am, doors will open at 9:00.

Here are the scenes from last year:

City admin wrote a letter to the developer basically saying 'wtf are you thinking' when it comes to the butchering. The focus now is the internal stairs, as I feel much of the external changes are going to be shut down by the city.

Pic of the stairs:
