I’m currently doing an extended stay in Milan, where the oldest continually operating restaurant is La Rampina. It opened in the 16th century but I’m not sure of the exact year.

In my city of Gatineau, Quebec the oldest is called the British Hotel. It's in the westermost part of Gatineau in what was once the city of Aylmer. It dates back to 1834 and is said to be the oldest such establishment in Canada west of Montreal. It hosted Edward VII among other notables it's seen during its history.

It was refurbished a few years ago and is now a pretty hip place.

Across the river in Ottawa the oldest such establishment is the Château Lafayette (known as the Laff) going back to 1849.

https://www.thelaff.ca/

It's in the heart of the city's Byward Market district, the oldest part of the city.

Tobacco Road in Brickell had been the longest running continuously open in the same place bar/restaurant in South Florida. It ran from 1912 to 2014 before being bought up and demolished. Joe's Stone Crab in South Beach has been open since 1913 but it has moved locations a few times. Cap's in Fort Lauderdale claims to be Florida's oldest restaurant as it has been operating in the same location since the 1920s.

This is a great thread idea! Is this restaurant perhaps the oldest in the US, still in operation?

Established in 1673? Incredible! That's only 50 years after the pilgrims landed.

Where is this location? When I was a kid, we would eat at the Christie's in the Med Center. That was a long, long time ago. Then we would eat at a location in Bellaire and also one on Westheimer. Haven't been to one since the 80s. I've never found seafood as good as that. I hope it still is. It was also very inexpensive and casual.

This place, called the Settlement Inn, has had many uses during its lifetime but it was built in 1861 as a stagecoach stop (where fresh horses were hitched up) on the San Antonio to San Diego stage line. It's in Leon Springs, TX just west of San Antonio off I-10.

In the 1980s they sold BBQ out of the main building as I recall and you could sit inside or outside. Outside on a warm evening was quite pleasant. I ate there sometime in the 1980s. They still sell BBQ but from a different building nearby.

Anyway, I guess I can't claim it's the oldest restaurant in San Antonio because it's not in San Antonio exactly and it hasn't always been a restaurant (though I think they sold food when it was an inn and hotel) but it's close.

In terms of formal, sit-down restaurants with licenses, Wilton's dates from 1742 but has changed location several times.

Simpsons changed from a pub to a restaurant at some stage since 1757

Rules has stayed in place since 1798

The oldest pubs (that would invariably have served food) date from the 1200's - but cellars aside (which also date from that century), the oldest still in the same building is Spaniards Inn from 1585, that still serves food.

It has been active at the same location since 1722. It is located in the Old Town of Stockholm.

34 Österlånggatan

From Wiki:
It is the second oldest restaurant in the world to have the same surroundings, according to the Guinness World Records. Its surroundings and environment are more or less unchanged since the day the restaurant opened in 1722, making it a unique example of an 18th-century tavern

I heard most of these restaurants are closed at the moment. That's a pity. I hope that with the end of the pandemic most of the restaurants will bounce back, but at this point I highly doubt it. It's a sad fact to be honest. I used to enjoy dining out in the area and went to some of the most renowned restaurants of the city that were endorsed by DishSumo. My favorite restaurant in the Phoenix are has and will be always an Italian trattoria that makes the exact same ravioli that we had when we visited Rome a few years ago.

I didn't realize Delmonico's is that old. The building where it's located definitely isn't that old. Per Wikipedia, the restaurant moved around quite a bit before settling into the current spot.

The Alpine Inn in Portola Valley claims to date back to 1852. No idea if it's true but I went there a lot in college.

Seems to be under new ownership now:

This came up when my partner and I were in Tucson last month; there's a restaurant there called El Charro Café that claims to be the oldest Mexican restaurant in the US that's still run by the same family, and it opened in 1922.

BUT, in Pasadena, CA, there's a Mexican restaurant called Mijares, which opened in 1920, that claims to be the oldest Mexican restaurant in Pasadena---and it also has been owned by the same family from the beginning.

So I'm wondering why Mijares doesn't claim to be the oldest continuously owned/operated Mexican restaurant in the US?
