Cincinnati Winter 2020/2021

This thread is pretty disorganized - photos from about 4 different walks around town.

Hillside regrading and new retaining walls above Columbia Parkway:

They appear to have built a new second wall in this area uphill from the original wall:

They really blew it with this bridge. It looked fine before and then somebody who designs strip mall signs got ahold of it.

New apartment buildings on Madison Rd. in Madisonville:

This is one of the bridges installed this year that sort-of improve the terrible pedestrian/bike situation in Newport:

A gate to keep people from walking across the hotel's parking lot:

...and some nearby netting to sort-of discourage people from simply hopping this thing instead of taking a 5-minute walk around the hotel:

New music venue in Newport, KY:

New pedestrian bridge-to-nowhere:

The new KY 8 with its traffic circles has proven to be so bad that they've already modified it with this right turn only modification:

Parking under the new music venue:

I have no idea what the rigid foam is for:

Artistry apartments going up:

These cranes aren't anchored into the ground. Instead they just pile weights on the base:

This building was renovated in the early 1990s and still looks good:

After 4+ years of construction, the Autograph opened right in the thick of the pandemic:

They are valet parking cars for the hotel under the Third St. viaduct:

????

Western-Southern butchered Lytle Park:

Tunnel ventilation:

Look at this ugly hotel:

One of the trees they chopped down:

Western-Southern in a nutshell:

From what I understand this is where P&G's executive offices remained after the much larger 1980s buildings were built:

Site of a landslide in 2019 or so:

Look at this thing:

Look at this 1970s renovation:

This extra-tall house is a bit of an anomaly for the area:

Wow, look at this driveway and rear parking lot. They're living large:

Macy's redevelopment:

Last but not least, the locally famous "Loveland Bike Trail" is part of the Ohio to Erie bicycle trail and is almost complete. It is a paved (no gravel) rec trail stretching about 325 miles between Downtown Cincinnati and Downtown Cleveland. There is a 60~ mile gap between Columbus and Cleveland but otherwise it's almost completely unbroken.

The first section to be completed near Cincinnati was in Loveland, a suburb about 20 miles northeast of the downtown. For that reason, the whole trail has taken on the name "Loveland Bike Trail" even though Loveland is just one town that it travels through.

Great set.

Looks so quiet, has covid hit hard in the area?

Why P&G headquarters looks like an abandoned complex and wait a minute....as I looked through the thread and the whole darn city looks abandoned...stepping on a no man's land... there must be something wrong with your camera or factor of lights or viewfinder...

About half of the photos were taken on Christmas Day. Also most of the houses pictured are student rentals near UC and so the students weren't in town.

Cincinnati is the largest MSA in this country I've never been to. Never had occasion to go. It looks very different architecturally and geographically from the other cities I've been to in the region.

Excellent tour.

One of these days...

Nice pictures. Cincinnati, at least in winter, definitely reminds me of other Ohio River Valley cities and areas, like Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and southeast Ohio.

The Western-Southern area looks like a great little historic neighborhood!

There's been talk of the Mohawk district getting fixed up for close to 10 years now, but it looks like little progress has been made at that intersection.

Correct. It's a pretty sad corner of town - similar to how the totality of Over-the-Rhine was from about 1980-2010.

There is a lot of speculative activity nearby so it's just a matter of time, maybe five years, until things start happening. Next I'll take a walk with the camera around the West End. There is more going on there on a house-by-house basis than ever before. There might be 20+ houses and buildings under renovation currently, all by individuals or small outfits.

The big money hasn't shown up quite yet but they'll be there soon since OTR was completely picked over by 2015 and now stuff is happening on the very worst streets like Loth St. and E. Clifton.

Yeah a fairly hardcore historic overlay enacted in the mid-1960s expired around 2015 and Western-Southern fired up the bulldozers and tore down three old row houses on tiny Arch St. in anticipation of construction of their new headquarters. They also booted the Anna Louise Inn (a historic home for poor single women that was built around 1910) and renovated the building into the hotel that is a weird mish-mash of styles.

The area was much more quaint before 1965~ when much of it was torn down to build I-71. It travels under this area in a tunnel but it's a cut-and-cover so they had to tear up the original park and various surrounding buildings.

The Taft Mansion is home to the Taft Museum of Art. They modified I-71 so that the house would be saved but they probably took out more buildings total than they would have if they had just torn down the house.

The Taft Museum was in the news last week because a Cincinnati-based artist from the 1800s had a painting in the news at Biden's inauguration: https://www.wlwt.com/article/first-l...nting/35269333

This artist painted the interior walls of the front entrance Taft house in the mid-1800s. It used to be the case that you used the front door to enter the museum and so every tour began with a description of the murals. Now you enter through a recent expansion on the side meaning you don't even realize when you're walking past the front door as you make your way through the museum.

The museum is also famous for having a fake Rembrandt. The painting was the star of the museum's collection for over 100 years until they brought in a bunch of experts in the 1980s and it was declared a fake. The painting has been banished to a corner. The Taft's paid like $100,000 for the fake back in the 1800s, so like tens of millions in today's money.
