(don't get me wrong I like driving as well, but I know the pain it can be when going to those events.)

Just read the comments section of any news article and its parking, parking, parking. You are correct 5 blocks is not that far in a city like Saskatoon. Such a weird mentality.
I really do think they need to try and find land somewhere along 2nd, 3rd or 4th and avenues to build this alomg where all the BRT are supposed to overlap. Even if they have to add skywalks or something for people it would make travel to and from events so much better. Having gone to events at the Saddledome its so nice to be able to just hop on and off the C Train.

As far as parking goes its not like a lot of events overlap normal daytime business hours. So I dont see how its a big issue. maybe someone will build a large multi access parking garage nearby? I read a report quite some time ago that suggested 300,000 people traveled in and out of downtown Calgary for work everyday. Theres no way they all drive. Its probably best that mentality starts to change in Saskatoon even if its forced on us a bit.

So far the Nutrien merger has cut jobs from Saskatoon and it looks like the 100 new jobs in Saskatchewan will basicly all be in Regina. This is a real kick to the shin for the Saskatoon office market.

No I believe those are different jobs.

I don't know where the Saskatoon Nutrien office is at right now for staff numbers after the elimination of the ~30 redundant positions, but earlier reports have stated that employment in the Saskatoon office will ultimately rise by about 15% to around 300.

I'm sure these things take time.

I believe that the public opinion on Edmonton in regards to a new downtown arena was quite negative for a long time.

Mandel/Iveson did it anyways and I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone that thinks it's a horrible thing now.

I think if the city did build an arena and decided to go the cheaper route and just build an arena... that area by attridge/preston/silverspring doesn't look bad.

I’ve heard their office here is maxed out and it is super old, so maybe there is a long term plan to build a newer office here versus expand to a second office right now. BHP also has people in both their 3rd ave office and at River Centre which I think is weird. Makes sense for them to have a presence in Regina to scope employees from Mosaic. I’m sorry but I feel like many mosaic employees would love to move to Saskatoon so there’s probably a good chance of them long term merging everything here once a new office is built for them (be it WTC, River Landing, River Quarry, or a completely new on their own development).

Im hoping we’re going to see a great building renovation renaissance happen in Saskatoon soon. Every single office Tower is so damn ancient here. Look at the financial banks - when is the last time they renovated any of these buildings? They’re so subpar to every other city. CIBC’s looks like a dungeon. I just went into TD’s for a card for the first time ever downtown and I was horrified that people would work there - still smells of cigarettes from the 90’s.

Not that this gets us too far, but the owner of the Rush is willing to put up 10% or about $20 million towards the cost of a new arena: http://thestarphoenix.com/news/local...downtown-arena.

That's a bold thing to just offer up right out of the gate.

Remember that the #1 job of most politicians is to get re-elected, so they typically lack the courage to do anything that will cost them votes in the next election. This is the same city that originally voted for the arena to be built out in the sticks and voted no to a downtown casino, so a new downtown location is far from a sure thing.
I have a more optimistic view of our current council and Mayor. Remember, our city council (prior and current) moved forward on the VERY controversial Remai Modern Art Gallery as they had the vision to see how this could benefit our community for years to come. I am hoping there is at least a similar level of support for an entertainment/sport venue that can benefit our city for years to come!

And "wow" on Urban stepping up already and saying he would contribute up to 10% of cost of a new downtown arena!! Offers like this don't come often or stay on the table forever, so I DO hope the city starts the ball rolling on a concrete plan to move this forward!

i think those online polls only show the people who are really against any new idea. They are the first to jump on social media, the first to phone the city and complain, the first to do whatever it takes for something to not happen, and voice out their negative reasoning, as i said earlier, those are people who think of themselves. My father was even rambling off about traffic, but he doesnt understand the economics behind this new proposal and how it benefits us, let alone he doesnt understand how the city builds and the plans behind it, along with my father are thousands of other people who are saying the same stuff with little to no knowledge of anything in this city. People should understand that the planners and developers behind this are taking traffic into consideration...like come on society lol....

I am a big RUSH fan and was on their social media yesterday thinking there would be all kinds of kudos and support for the RUSH owner supporting a downtown arena. Well....to my shock...most of the posts were AGAINST a downtown arena and yes....PARKING...was the only reason given for opposition. I just don't get it....how does every other major city in North America somehow cope with a major event centre downtown, but apparently that would be Armageddon in Saskatoon!? I wish people would get over their car centric attitudes and look beyond some potential personal inconvenience in their travel plans. Some even said they already avoid downtown like the plague because of current parking. OMG...we should be celebrating that we have such a vibrant downtown core!

I guess I just think a whole lot different then most in Saskatoon....

Mayor Clark put it nicely when he said that downtown Saskatoon has 15,000 parking spaces. We don't have a "parking problem" downtown. We have a "I can't park 10 steps away from my destination when I go downtown" problem.

I'm okay with taking transit to the new arena because they can build it to work. They did in Regina. It works wonderfully.

It's not like they're going to pop a 15-16k seat arena downtown and not touch infrastructure, transit, or parking.

New to the forum...long time lurker. Yes, someone please start a new arena thread. I think the best option for a new Saskatoon arena is at the north end of downtown, on the Robin Hood mill site. If enough fuss is put up about tearing down the mill then tear down the one to the west of it and the former McDonalds Consolidated building, still lots of room. Other than the mill itself there is nothing of historical value in that area. City Hall already has a north downtown master plan and i think this could fit in nicely. Check out the master plan at CoS website and picture the arena on the mill site. Cheers.

If you are going to go up there then might as well cross the river and build on the University lands. Lots of land available on College Drive.

North downtown is probably the most likely place as it is already city owned and set for redevelopment. However the mills will not be removed as per the masterplan they are to stay in place. I dont think you will see them move unless you move those rail lines and then whose to say they will rebuild anywhere near Saskatoon? Im not sure what those mills bring in yearly but losing both those mills may hurt enough economically to sway a decision. They are probably worth preserving overall unless you can make the case that it will be more benificial to move/remove them along with the rail lines.

I am excited for the potential downtown arena/convention center. I am also grateful to find that some of you are as well! Most people that I've tried to discuss this with have been quite negative. TAXES!! PARKING!! Exhausting. Anyone that has taken in the fireworks festival.. in our downtown.. managed to get there.. along with 25,000 other people. All without our BRT in place.
I believe we have an amazing city.. that needs a vibrant downtown!

Hear hear.

The people peddling the tired arguments about a parking and traffic apocalypse with a downtown arena fail to apply any critical thinking to the matter.

The parking study that the City did a couple of years ago found something like 12,000 parking spaces downtown. That's far more than what's required for a ~15,000 seat arena. Some people may have to walk a few blocks, but many are already walking the equivalent at SaskTel Centre when they park all the way along Thatcher Ave almost all the way to Marquis Dr.

What's more, is that a downtown location automatically makes other modes of travel more practical. More people can walk and cycle (I'd be able to do so easily), and taking transit (with park and ride at the malls) becomes a far more viable option with BRT on the way anyway. More out-of-towners will choose to stay at downtown hotels and their cars will stay parked there.

As for traffic, there are more ways into and out of downtown than SaskTel Centre. Simple as that. Michelle Obama had a crowd of 8,000 last night and traffic was still a nightmare up there. With the downtown food and drink options, some people will choose to come downtown earlier, or stay later, making for a more staggered exodus after an event. With SaskTel Centre, people essentially arrive and leave all at the same time.

Even John Gormley is on-side with the *urban* solution of a downtown arena.

C'mon people, in no world is SaskTel Centre's current location better than a downtown option. (Preaching to the choir on this page, I know.)

Welcome to the forum!

I might be the only one that defends them, but I absolutely love those mills and would be sad to see them ever go. They're landmarks, and the city's sense of place would be lessened without them. They're not beautiful in any traditional sense, but their scale is mighty and powerful and they're gritty and they harken back to our economic past unlike any other physical identifiers left in town. I was crushed when the P&H mill on the west side went down a few years ago.

Keep the mills!

Can you please copy and paste and send to the "letters to editor" section of the Star Phoenix. You have articulated this really well and it needs to be shared beyond this forum.

Nope....not the only one. It is just not beautiful pieces of architecture from our past that should be preserved. Sometimes structures of our history should be preserved as well.

Hopefully, a few rural Grain Elevators (the sentinels of the prairies) will also be spared the fate of a wrecking ball.
