Quote:
EDMONTON - Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut is opening a new-concept store on the corner of 124th Street and Jasper Avenue.
More than a year after the chocolate company went into receivership under its namesake founder, Bernard Callebaut, new co-owner Mike Freeland is broadening the product line from its traditional chocolates to gelato, coffee and desserts.
The Edmonton location is to be a high-profile flagship store.
Freeland, who is the company’s Edmonton dealer, its co-owner and director, has signed a lease to move into what is now the McElheran’s Fine Furniture clearance centre. McElheran’s main store, just north on 124th Street, remains open.
McElheran’s owner Jeff McElheran said he is closing the clearance centre because the retailer has expanded its main showroom, allowing an on-site clearance centre.
Freeland takes possession of the 2,720-square-foot space Feb. 1 and plans to complete a $400,000 transformation into a store and café offering gelato, coffee, pastries and chocolate by April.
“What do I like about the new place? Basically everything,” Freeland said. “Great visibility, great parking, great neighbourhood and lots of space to do things right.”
The existing Bernard Callebaut shop across from Mountain Equipment Co-op, just north of the new location, will eventually close, as will the gelato shop next door, also owned by Freeland.
He says the new location is roomy and he will add outdoor seating.
