the AJC are really a bunch of tools. their moving to the suburbs was the last straw for me. i hope they fail. we don't need them anymore.

The AJC in the burbs is not the problem; it is unfortunate that the large complex that is Cox communication is not in the city - even Buckhead would have been a win.

Atlanta Botanical Garden plans multimillion expansion

Quote:
The Atlanta Botanical Garden is about to embark on its first expansion in four years, which will add new gardens, paths, water features and a pavilion to one of the last mature woodlands in the city.

The 30-acre attraction adjacent to Piedmont Park in Midtown plans to enhance about 10 acres in the “Storza Woods” portion of its campus.

Liberty Plaza work begins

http://www.ajc.com/gallery/news/libe...mepage#5343847

Quote:
Crews start demolition work on a 60-year-old parking deck across from the statehouse Thursday, June 5, 2014, beginning what could be a years long project to give Capitol Hill it's first major facelift since the Jimmy Carter was president. The parking area will be transformed into Liberty Plaza, a protest-rally-park area that could become home to a planned new monument to Martin Luther King Jr.

Piedmont Park looks to add restaurant, expand outdoor dining space

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/b...nt-expand.html

Quote:
The Piedmont Park Conservancy recently submitted an application in Atlanta to reconfigure its community center for an additional restaurant and more patio space.

The building that sits along Piedmont Avenue, near the intersection of 12th Street, today houses Willy’s Mexicana Grill and the former ParQ pizzeria.
The ParQ space would expand from about 900 square feet to more than 1,500 square feet.

A third restaurant, which would be about 700 square feet, would be added. It would likely house a “grab-and-go” concept, said Penelope Cheroff, president of Atlanta restaurant and retail brokerage The Cheroff Group Ltd., who is handling the leasing efforts for the conservancy.

In addition, the outdoor patio space at the community center would double, from about 2,000 square feet to 4,000 square feet.

Atlanta Arts Festival, Music Midtown duel over Piedmont Park date

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/m...duel-over.html

Quote:
The Atlanta Arts Festival and Music Midtown have both asked the city for a permit to use Piedmont Park the same September weekend.
The future of the arts festival could be at stake, reports Atlanta Business Chronicle broadcast partner WXIA-TV.

The Atlanta Arts Festival, which has been around longer, is already marketing its 2015 festival for the weekend of Sept. 19, according to WXIA's Doug Richards. The arts festival filed its permit application with the city in November. Music Midtown, which attracts more people, filed its application last week.

Music Midtown paid $400,000 for its permit last year. The Atlanta Arts Festival paid $5,000 for its permit, Richards added.

PATH Parkway project begins construction

I was not aware of this project.

https://pathfoundation.org/2016/04/p...-construction/
Quote:
PATH will begin construction on the PATH Parkway project on the Georgia Tech campus later this month. PATH, Georgia Tech, and the City of Atlanta are partnering to create an incredible linear park between Northside Drive and North Avenue by eliminating the southbound lanes of Tech Parkway and claiming the space for pedestrians and cyclists.

yeh that is pretty awesome... Tech Parkway isnt used very heavily anyway so this makes a lot of sense. and helps add some nice pedestrian connectivity to the westside. it looks like they plan to add some sort of marked crossing where the path runs into Northside.. I would still feel pretty sketchy crossing Northside at that location without a dedicated signal.

Four design teams named finalists for Centennial Olympic Park makeover

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/n...entennial.html

Quote:
The Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA), the state agency that oversees the park, recently reported the following four firms are the “highest-ranked respondents” for the project:

• CRJA-Rosser
• DTJ Design
• Rogers Partners
• Sizemore-AECOM
A capital campaign kicked off last year, with the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation stepping up with a $10 million donation and GWCCA committing $2.5 million.

A large majority of the campaign (about $13 million) would be spent to acquire and demolish the Metro Atlanta Chamber building.

Metro Atlanta Chamber moving to 191 Peachtree tower

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/n...peachtree.html
Quote:
The Metro Atlanta Chamber will move from its own multi-story building on Centennial Olympic Park to the 34 th floor of the 191 Peachtree Tower by the end of the year.

In March, the Chamber sold its building to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, which intends to demolish the building and turn it into additional green space as part of its plan to improve the 20-year-old park.

CAP study of capping Downtown Connector with "The Stitch"

WHAT IS IT?

http://www.atlantadowntown.com/initi...ion/the-stitch

http://issuu.com/atldowntown/docs/ps...24234/37841133

Quote:
This transformative project envisions capping the Downtown Connector by constructing a ¾-mile platform over the highway, extending from the Civic Center MARTA station at West Peachtree Street to Piedmont Avenue. This new space would create urban greenspace and foster new development both atop and adjacent to the platform. The re-imagined Emory Square MARTA station (currently Civic Center MARTA station) is a key focal point of The Stitch. The station will be re-positioned as a major transit hub for this part of the City, stimulating both commercial and residential growth. Above all, the project will fill the void between Downtown and Midtown, disjointed years ago due to construction of the interstate. The "re-stitching" of the neighborhoods will bring about a unified central business district for the City of Atlanta.

Proposed street grid in The Stitch concept that would connect Midtown and Downtown via a “deck park.”

The concept study imagined three “character zones” programmed with a variety of uses.

Emory Square: A dynamic urban plaza set atop a regional bus terminal. The plaza will connect St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on the west to a re-imagined Emory Square MARTA station, as well as to Emory’s future “Medical Arts Institute” building and to new retail and residential areas.

Peachtree Green: A 3-acre town green with active program elements on all sides including water features, a restaurant and café, a pavilion space for markets and art shows, an art walk, a “Mayor’s Walk,” and a civic heroes memorial.

Energy Park: A mixed-use residential area intertwined with an urban park made up of lawns, a dog park, a playground, water features, a splash pad, a flex-use pavilion, and a garden walk. Its location next to Georgia Power’s headquarters will provide opportunities to use green construction and power technologies.

Skyline Garden To Debut This May at Botanical Garden

https://whatnowatlanta.com/rendering...anical-garden/

Quote:
The Atlanta Botanical Garden this May could unveil a new 1.5-acre addition called Skyline Garden, the company in a press release announced Wednesday.
Skyline Garden would not only offer the Garden's "best views" of the city but would also be visible from many of Midtown's green spaces, including neighboring Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Beltline, according to the announcement.
“This is going to be one of the most spectacular venues in the city, whether you’re into exploring a unique palette of plants that can flourish in the Southeast or want to hold a romantic wedding with a skyline view or simply need a quiet escape – all in the center of the city,” Mary Pat Matheson, the Garden’s president and CEO, said in the release.

New images and video of Centennial Olympic Park makeover

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/n...l-olympic.html
Quote:
One dramatic addition will be at the Baker Street entrance, where a large water wall and reflecting pool will be built to help welcome visitors to the park.

There will be a host of new interactive sculptures that honor Olympic achievements, from the fastest 100-meter dash to records set in sports including long jump, discus, pole vault and shot put. The pieces will reflect achievements from both 1996 and 1886, Hill said.

There also will be a large Olympic torch sculpture and an awards podium, along with a new Olympic Rings feature that can change colors.

Final Concept Plan for Memorial Drive Greenway

The final concept is completed here (http://parkpride.org/wp-content/uplo...lans-archd.pdf)
There's still the small issue of getting it built.

Seems over-designed and not that functional. I'd be glad to be wrong- but seems like a hodgepodge of impervious surfaces added to the area instead of green space that makes sense.

Yes, I was hoping for more grassy greenspace without "interruptions".
