“Chrome & Columns” should be somewhere around “Ye Olde Drinking Tavern” in Astoria, Queens.

I hadn't ever noticed that NJ had barrier islands on its Atlantic shore. That area is really one of my blind spots. Never been southeast of NJ Turnpike. I never think "beach" when I think NJ. It's either Old Orchard or else NC-or-below.

really?

atlantic city, "the boardwalk", ocean city, wildwood, the god-awful but wildly popular TV show "Jersey Shore", none of those ring a bell at all for you?

Of course. I know NJ has an oceanfront. I just never had any reason to go near it. It's not in my mind as a potential beach destination at all.

yeah, i get that.

the jersey shore is much more of a "local" beach destination for the massive NYC/philly region than places further south. it's reach beyond the northeast as a beach destination is much more limited.

living in chicago my entire life, rarely i have i ever heard people here say "we're taking a beach vacation to the jersey shore", like they do for places further south like virginia beach, hilton head, the entire state of florida, the gulf coast, etc.

Yeah, there's a bunch of tourists on beaches over the place called Ocean City. I can tell, I went there once in the summer.
Honestly, people over the place are very friendly to tourists and it was very nice. There's nothing wrong about beaches and related activities. You may try nautical sports for your vacations, it is cool.
We've got plenty of this kind of seaside resorts here in France, and people are fairly satisfied by them, cause it's fun for your money.

Atlantic City on the other hand was a wannabe casino town of sorts, or say they tried to be so. I couldn't tell whether it would be successful in that industry, because it felt quite empty compared to sinful Las Vegas.
I wouldn't encourage any place in building casinos, because they're a mean trick. They are designed to make people lose money. I mean, casino managers surely can count, definitely skilled at algebra and probability, while most random people aren't.
So they are a dishonest industry IMHO.

But Ocean City is a genuine and innocent seaside resort. There's no casino, but some honest sport to do.

Yeah, I was going to say you're likely in the same category as me for that, with two distinct levels of beach vacation. (Here it's usually either Old Orchard Beach in Maine or Florida, for your location the "lower level" is obviously some Great Lakes Beach.) Going to NJ would be a logically injustifiable compromise.

Edit: for someone coming from France to visit NYC-and-surroundings in the summer, a beach trip to NJ is much more logical as a part of that trip. But for me or someone like Steely, if we're going to NYC, it's not for the beaches.
