Your city's "Queens"

Why not? But not interested in "population within 178 square miles" but rather areas that are similar socially, built form and serve a similar function to the city.

Some possible comparisons:

- A lot of the immigrant-heavy areas of North London

- L.A.'s San Fernando Valley

- Maybe Northeast Philadelphia to some degree (?)

Queens is also the borough that reminds me the most of my home city of Toronto: a lot of it built up around the same time, heavily immigrant with no particular group dominating, mix of high rises and SFHs etc.

This right here is about to get a lot denser by 2020. Many many units are going up within Flushings and the surroundings. Usually not a tourist hotspot, I'd recommend it for those who haven't been there. Lots of good food, good culture, and so on. Taking the 7 line will get you there relatively quickly. Worth the trip.

Yes...Northeast Philly would be our Queens.

South Philadelphia is Brooklyn.

North Philly over to West Philly is The Bronx

Northwest Philly Roxborough...Manayunk...Mt. Airy) is Staten Island (since it's kind of detached from the rest of the city)

...and obviously Center City and it's boundry neighborhoods are Manhattan.

What exactly exemplifies "Queens"?

I think of Archie Bunker, Maude, airports and those Willets Point hooker shows on TLC. And that weird dirt road, chop shop district near the ballpark. There's got to be more so how would you describe the essence of the place?

Don't people get sick of always comparing things to some sort of NYC template? Can't we compare Puerto Madero, French Concession, or Adams Morgan? This is exhausting.

My entire father side of my family is from Queens and I spent a decent chunk of my childhood there and I can't think of a good way of describing it (mostly because the blue collar, white Queens of my childhood no longer exists). Queens isn't really single thing except a collection of completely different neighborhoods that happen to all be inside of Queens. To quote the cabbie in Coming to America: "There's one thing Queens has got a lot of, it's common parts."

but we're just getting started! and, hey, why stop at the boroughs? aren't you curious about what your city's westchester could be? or your city's hamptons? hoboken?

isn't philly sometimes called new york's 6th borough? what city hours away from yours should be honorarily included as a part of your city?? let's get some more threads going, guys!

-LA's Queens is the Valley.
-Chicago's Queens is the NW as stated.
-SF's Queens is the Sunset
-Philly kind of Queens is the inner NE with North Philly being South Queens (outer NE would be SI)(Bronx would be West Philly)
(Brooklyn would be all of South Philly)

No one dominates in Queens, all groups have large numbers. When I recently
checked out Queens Center, it overall appeared to me dominated by Latinos.

I really wonder what the future Queens (50 years ahead) would look like. My guess would be about what it is now, with maybe a % or two increase for whites. Reduction in the Latino population by 7 or 8%. Increase in Asian population by 5% or so and a slight increase in black population by 1% or so.

And in many ways, urban form. Like London, Queens is basically a collection of villages that grew into each other. You can address a letter to Long Island City, Jamaica, Forest Hills, Astoria, Flushing, etc and it will get there.

And topography... Queens has gently rolling hills in many parts, like London.
