Judging by the clothes, I'd say late 50s early 60s. What I find odd is a picture of downtown LA and not a car in sight.

No cars? It could be a Sunday.

Here is a Smithsonian photo from around 1955....googies appears to be closed.

Good find CityBoyDoug.

"The Largest Stage in the World...700ft long."

ebay

By looking at the surrounding hillside I believe this is Universal Studios.

Notice the silent movie sets in the distance. Pretty cool.

It's difficult to imagine the beach attire in this photograph was once considered risque.

Anyone recognize these 'silent film' ladies?

Thanks, CBD. Too bad you have no more information on the photo, but the fate of the photographer is about as noirish as it gets!

Thanks,

Dinner at Romanoff's with Gloria Graham and Ralph Meeker for anyone who can identify this house--only clue I have so far is possibly the Pasadena/Altadena area--

above: I just noticed they're not all from Ocean Park. There's one from Santa Monica and one from Venice...and I can't read the other one.

Judging from the Westside locations of all of them, it looks like Redondo Beach to me.

It was the last trolley stop before crossing Riverside Drive and the Los Angeles River. The station closed in 1955, the Riverside Viaduct
at Monte Sano was dismantled in 1959 (the same year the nearby Fletcher Viaduct was dismantled).

In the above 1955 photograph notice the balustrade at far left.
The balustrade (and stairs) were left to deteriorate for over 30 years!

The stairs pictured, descended down to Riverside Drive from the trolley stop. It appears the railway was located midway between Riverside Drive
and Monte Sano Hospital. I wonder if there were additional stairs leading up to the hospital?

I lived in Atwater (Village) from '56 thru '67. Though the trolley was defunct by then, the rail bed along the hillside between Glendale Blvd. and Flether Dr. was clearly visible. I remember Monte Sano, which was visible from Atwater, and remember those stairs quite clearly. I remember too, the Fletcher drive wooden trestle. Never occurred to me, as a kid, the historical significance of it all.

Hey, as long as I'm lurking around on here, I feel like I should toss in one noirish tidbit: one dark night in January 1937, a man broke into Monte Sano and tried to smash in the skull of one Mrs H W Koll. She awoke in time, though, and her screams scared him off. Now, because of her description of the brick-wielding gent (large, African-American) this was likely the first of the attacks of serial killer Robert Nixon (about whom I scribbled in some detail as part of my post on Bunker Hill's Astoria Apartments -- a 2008 post that would have benefited from the following image, which would not surface for another two years).

Looking north on Hill Street from the north portal of tunnel no. 1, ca.1920

Here are three amateur snapshots I recently came across on ebay.

I especially like this one.
Great shot looking north on Hill Street from atop the north portal of Hill Street tunnel no. 1, with the car turning south onto Hill Street from Temple and the south portal of Hill Street tunnel no. 2 clearly visible. Best view I've ever seen of tunnel no. 2. Notice also the streetcar sitting to the right of the tunnel between the two trees. I wonder if it is on a siding or if there was a spur to allow streetcars on Temple access to the tunnel. Hill Street jogs to the right at Temple before continuing up and over Fort Moore Hill, the clock tower at the high school is visible center/top horizon-line. The clock tower/belfry on the Poundcake High School building is visible in the haze at top/left horizon-line. Note the advertisement below right for Julian Eltinge who was quite active (and popular) locally in the teens, so this may be somewhat earlier than 1920.

My father worked a couple of doors north on Olive St. from the mid-50s to 1961. I'd occasionally join him on weekday school holidays and have the run of the neighborhood, including breakfast at Googies. Too young for coffee then, but loved the pancakes!

Thanks for bringing back those memories, ER!

USC's Digital Library has a fairly large collection of Citizens National Trust & Savings Bank photos, mostly from the late 1920s. I've also found a few contemporary shots from other sites, so I'm going to work through the list in the advert below. I've split up the photos so they're not in one monumental post. My aim is to make the most complete list I can, so there may be a few repeats from previous posts.

This is their full-page advert from the 1929 City Directory.

LAPL

The building shown in the advert is their head office at Fifth and Spring.

Citizens National Bank, exterior view

LAPL

The building is still there, but has lost the ornamentation on its upper floors.

GSV

This is the Hill Street Office at 736 South Hill Street. The building is now a parking lot.

USC Digital Library

I also found this 1925 picture which has the bank on the right. The building to the left of the bank has also gone, but the Paden-Pelton Building is still there. There's probably enough detail in this picture to make a post in its own right!

USC Digital Library

The Broadway Office at 308 South Broadway.

USC Digital Library

The "...BURY" on the left of the picture above is part of a sign saying "BRADBURY" because the bank was on the right side of the first floor of the Bradbury Building. It's now a Subway!

Panoramio

I didn't find any pictures of the Atwater branch, but the building that's currently at 3224 Glendale Boulevard looks like it could date from that period.

GSV

Citizens Trust and Savings, branch at 5415 Broadway, Southern California, 1927

USC Digital Library

The building currently at 5415 South Broadway has a similar footprint, so could the original bank be underneath? The surviving buildings to the right have similar brickwork to the picture above.

GSV

We know that the Union Stock Yards have gone, and I didn't find any pictures of the bank there. It's the same story with the Echo Park-Sunset and Eighth-Vermont branches. The former is now a Walgreens parking lot while the latter is a strip mall.

ETA:

I eventually (nearly 18 months later!) found this picture showing the sign from the Echo Park-Sunset branch. There's a much better view of the building, minus the bank, in post #30181 by e_r. It also includes a view of the building with the bank's first floor hidden by a streetcar.

Detail of picture at Getty Research Institute

More to follow ...
