Urban Housing Starts Set Record in September
ST. JOHN'S, Oct. 9 /CNW/ - Urban housing starts set a record for the
month of September, according to preliminary data released today by Canada
Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). September's total housing starts
surged 26 per cent, with a record 227 posted across provincial urban centres
versus 180 a year ago. Of the 227 starts, 178 occurred within the St. John's
metropolitan area compared to 150 last September, an increase of 19 per cent.
To date, urban housing starts total 1,291, up a respectable 15 per cent over
the first nine months of 2006.
"September's record number of housing starts marks the fourth consecutive
month of growth over last year," said Chris Janes, Senior Market Analyst with
CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador. "The economy is strong, consumer confidence
is high and this is having a very positive impact on the demand for newly
built homes across the province," added Janes.
For Canada's urban centres, total housing starts increased 44 per cent to
22,031 in September over September of 2006. Single-detached starts shed
four per cent to 8,226, while multiple starts of 13,805 represent a notable
106 per cent jump compared to last September. Throughout Atlantic Canada,
there were 1,029 urban housing starts, a sizeable 40 per cent gain over the
same month last year.
