Maybe Americans could finally start pronouncing "Orléans" the correct way as part of its renaissance. ; )

I seem to recall I've heard both "New Orleens" and "New Orlahns" and I'm not sure which is right... strangely enough, I've been to Louisiana many times yet I don't have a clear recollection of ever hearing the city's name spoken in English.

I suppose I could just google it

They're both wrong, the French word is pronounced Or-lay-on.

I know perfectly well how to pronounce it in French, what I don't know is how to pronounce it in American English... they're both "wrong", but one of them still has to be right...?

P.S. while at it, your last syllable shouldn't be "on" but rather "an", like for example anthem or anterior (versus your suggestion of onthem/onterior).

They say "Nouvelle Orléans" in super strict French, where Orléans is pronounced just the same way as the damn old original town in central France.

I don't mind the American-English "OrleenS." It's just ok, who cares?

Glad to see that you ventured out of the Quarter, and that you had a good time.

In terms of local pronunciation...it is either New Or-luhns or New Or-lee-ans. Depends on what part of the city you live in.

sort of sped through the thread, this building caught my eye the second time through. gotta be one of the most european looking buildings I've ever seen in north america. unfortunately showing the effects of the very new world brand of humidity in the mississippi valley.

Well, it sounds terrible, tbh.

But Americans will always be too lazy to actually pronounce things correctly.

Was also happy to see New Orleans love for Philly's favorite citizen - Mr. Ben Franklin ....beads and all for the original American party boy.

It's an American city, the Americans are the one pronouncing it "right", regardless of how they pronounce it (as long as it's the one and only commonly accepted way in the US).

I've heard some Southerns say:

"New Awlins" or "Nawlins"

Is that common too? Do many locals say it either of those ways?

Aside: do people from Chicago say:

"Shi-KAW-go"

or

"Shi-KAH-go"? (with the "A" like the "a" in "apple" or "pan")

I hear both. Is it generally ethnicity based? Do black people say more the first, white people more the second?

oh, c'mon. it's not a matter of laziness. this is exactly how languages evolve. by your logic, if the French weren't so lazy they'd still be speaking Vulgar Latin.
