I always look forward to and appreciate your updates. It is amazing how much construction activity there is in Downtown at the moment. Metropolis is really moving forward quickly. Fig Central not so much.

Anyone know of Baltimore Hotel Apartments?

My first post!
I am interested in heading out west. I visited Phoenix and immediately fell in love with the southwest, and Los Angeles is where I plan to make my next stop. I've been working a lot over the last year to save up plenty of money.

I've done some research on downtown because I want to be able to live there without needing a car or having to buy an expensive transit pass every month. Some of the properties I looked at online were cheap for a reason, but then I discovered the Baltimore Apartment Hotel at 501 S Los Angeles St. I know the apartments are very small but having been a resident caretaker at a YWCA hostel here for a while, I'm used to that kind of place. My question is, for those of you familiar or who live downtown, do you know much about this area? Is there anything important I should know? I am an EMT and have dealt with all kind of people so nothing about homeless people or drug overdoses or drunks or screaming crazy people surprises me - I've seen it all already!

Hopefully when I get out there I can take some good photos and post them on here as well...thanks for your help in advance...

JJ

Welcome to the forum.

I don't live downtown but I do know that at 5th Street and Los Angeles you'll definitely see all of what you've described and on a daily basis. The homelessness situation in the entire city of Los Angeles is out of control and 5th and Los Angeles is on the doorsteps of the epicenter of it all.

Additionally, you might get more traction if you repost your question in another more appropriate forum than the city photo thread.

I used to work in pershing square and definitely agree with what dktshb was saying. I seems like gun crime isnt a big problem there compared to the rest of the city but as for everything else, i definitely would be careful. One thing ill add is that the area is one of the most rapidly gentrified parts of downtown so if you move there now you may not be able to afford it in the future. Other than that tho, youre very near transit and if youre looking for an urban experience its one of the best spots in LA, especially for a blend of old and new architecture. Honestly if you make a trip out to see the apartment and are happy with it id say 100% go for it but definitely make sure it isnt slum housing before you put any money down

Amazing photos! I really like those evening shots of the city. Glad to see Whole Foods has opened. Looks like The Bloc is not opening before the holidays. Thanks for continuing to post these photos. We're spoiled in Los Angeles to have your display your photography.

Thanks! I appreciate that.

Its complicated to talk about The Bloc opening. What does that really mean? In reality the retail & restaurants won't be fully built out even by the holidays 2016.
