It sounds like this is worse flooding than 2005. Is that accurate? Has there really been that much rain?

I went by Fish Creek and it's flooded in areas but doesn't look nearly as bad as in 05. But we still haven't gotten the main surge yet.

This morning the rain was so heavy that my car was slightly hydroplaning on Deerfoot.

Wasn't 2005 the worst flooding ever recorded in Calgary and Southern Alberta prior to this year? If not, which year (s) then?

Has to be one of the worst on record but I'm not sure.

Funny personal experience from the spring following the flood in '05. I was wandering the banks of Fish Creek (a provincial park within the city) looking for debris that may have washed up from the flooding. I found a human jaw bone. The police confirmed it was human and interred it where they put unidentified human remains. It looked quite old and was likely washed up from a native burial ground within the park. A week or two later I read in the paper that a farmer west of the city found entire human skeletons washed up from the waters.

Anyways, wonder what the flood will dig up this year?

Fish Creek got it bad in 05 after a dam burst at the Priddis Green golf course. I remember the flood in 95 took out the pedestrian bridges at Weaselhead and at Douglasdale. That year rain liquefied a large and persistent mountain snow pack in only a few hours. It took years to rebuild the hiking and mountain bike trails west of Bragg.

So that bridge will have to be completely torn down if the flood doesn't collapse it first...

WOW, it will be very expensive to fix all that has happened. As well, with highways closed, there will be a huge impact on truck transport.

If Bowness and Sunnyside are being evac'd - I'm not sure if "unprecedented" is appropriate yet, but motherfucking scary sure is.

I've heard that the police plan to close off access into the downtown area at some point tonight. I'm kinda wondering if downtown will even be open for business tomorrow. The LRT runs right though Sunnyside. Hopefully this is just a precaution.

100,000 people. Mind-boggling for this city.

I'm also hearing reports of boil water advisories in many places, with more being added all the time. I'm half-expecting Calgary to be under one eventually, with so much sediment and debris that we'll be dealing with shortly. Anyone who can, stock up on bottled water.

Just got evacuated from my office in east Vic Park, cop said that they might kill power to the entire downtown tonight, probably switch off the gas too. I'm probably heading out to the country for the night. I hope this is all precautionary....
