Has anyone put thought into the Hyperloop idea for a link between Calgary-Edmonton- Fort McMurray? The physical foot print for such a line would be considerably smaller than new twinned rail lines. Far less land acquisitions; too bad the technology is yet unproven.

^Big problem for it is thermal expansion. And building anything that requires fine tolerances through the Muskeg to Fort McMurrary would be expensive.

China has maglev technology based on the German Transrapid system, which they bought limited rights to when the Shanghai line was put in. China has also built the most northerly true high speed rail line to Harbin, where the climate is much like northern Alberta.

Just buy the land, make a separated very straight paved dedicated lane, and then run these babies at 150 km/hr

or this 250km/hr 'superbus'
