this thing is going up at a fast pace! It should give Newark a nice new look when completed!

Prudential 'tops the house' on new office tower in downtown Newark

By Tom De Poto/The Star-Ledger
May 30, 2014

Quote:
Bearing signatures of iron workers, construction crew members and Prudential officials and with an American flag attached, the final steel beam for the insurance giant’s new 20-story office building in downtown Newark was hoisted into position yesterday.

Richard Hummers, Prudential vice president, called it “an incredible milestone” moments before a crane raised the girder to the top floor. Noting the harsh winter, Hummers said it was “a pretty incredible feat to be where we are today. It’s an exciting time for Newark, and an exciting time for Prudential.”

Work began on the site about a year ago with the demolition of abandoned stores — including landmarks such as S. Klein on the Square and Schraft’s. Construction began shortly after on the $444 million office tower. Before the bitter cold weather arrived, crews worked double shifts into the night to build the skeleton.

The view overlooks the recently rehabilitated Military Park, the Passaic River and is unobstructed all the way to the Manhattan skyline.

According to Bob DeFillippo, Prudential spokesman, work on the exterior and interior is expected to begin in the next few weeks. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2015.

Prudential’s global headquarters will remain in the landmark building at 751 Broad St. The new building will house staff currently in the Gateway Building in Newark.

The insurance giant, Newark’s largest and oldest corporation, has plans for another office tower adjacent to the new one.

It'll be interesting to see if the election of Ras Baraka will affect Newark's turnaround. I'm not optimistic.

The second tower has not started yet. I was just in Newark Monday. The streets around it are still sealed off. Its a very big site, and windows are being installed and work on the base is occurring. Essentially heavy duty interior work.

It's cute. More excited about the other future projects down the line though.

Most of the projects in Downtown Newark are residential. But they lease out very fast compared to the commercial projects. 2-4 weeks and everything is taken and thats at Market Rate.

Let's hope they move onto the second phase before long.

Walked by the site today. Most of the building is now glass and they made some improvements to it compared to the picture above this post (fixed some of those empty spots almost up to the roof). The side streets are still narrowed due to the construction, but its clearing up. No lights yet, but there's the faint lights on the roof. Must be finishing up that portion.
