I dont quite understand what we are seeing there...why two vertical layers? will the caison stay in, and the center be filled with rebar, then concrete?

You have the caisson liner, the inner liner which is permanent and then you have the outer liner, which will be removed. They grout the space between which help for fill voids and prevents the shifting of soil. They'll still put a rebar cage down the central liner and fill it with concrete.

^That lone, yellow excavator looks awfully guilty... What a bad year for barges in Chicago!

I've been meaning to remark on how cool it is to see them utilizing a barge rather than dump trucks for removing dirt and debris from site. That's about as eco-friendly as you can get in the construction business.

Holy crap. Looks pretty full. Wonder if it rained so much that the barge was overwhelmed by the gravel and water. Looks like it got Edmund Fitzgeralded. We did get 3+ inches. Looks like it will be a bitch to remove.

My office is right across the river from this. I saw the empty barge this morning, then when I went to lunch I saw they had piled a ton of stuff in the middle of the barge. Then I get back and it sunk. I'm assuming they should not have piled everything right in the center of the very long barge.

Damn, word spreads quick. I was walking by during lunch and apparently just missed it as the police were just arriving. Looks like it split in two.

At work and don't have time to resize so links will have to do:

My guess is they did not account for the density of bedrock. The OxBlue webcam shows no picture and just reads "Service Suspended," which is the first time I've ever seen that.

Yeah I'm on an upper floor of 150 N Wacker and am constantly looking at all 3 sites. There was barely anything in it this morning. Looked like they were moving a lot from 10 to noon-ish (mostly in the middle). Then by 1pm it was underwater.

A barge just sank at the construction site.

I guess I'm late in the notification.

If you can keep it afloat, that is! (actually being the Chicago River and all, I don't think this will qualify as an environmental disaster (yes, yes - before someone mentions it, I freely admit it's much less toxic than it was a few decades ago!)

This would be one massive fuck-up by someone. I mean, we're all human and make mistakes and all, but that's a pretty big one!

Also, it's sure a good thing that O'Donnell/Clark was able to 'think on the fly' and turn off the webcam, so that nobody was able to get any photo evidence of this.....perhaps nobody will even notice at all........

Simply inexcusable.

Actually, that is quite a large number of rock caissons (particularly if they are all around this massive size) that will I think be packed into a fairly tight footprint....

I wonder, does anybody know what the record number of rock caissons is for a Chicago skyscraper?
