Hi all, I'm still lurking my way through this thread (fell way behind and am now on pg. 1011, trying to do 10 a day) but I recently came across the post on page 1005 or thereabouts finally showing the northern portal to the North Hill Street tunnel, and that inspired me to fire up LA Noire again (something I rarely do these days) to go hunting for pictures.

There's the good ol' north portal:

Just inside the tunnel:

The alley behind Temple:

The Figueroa underpass at Temple:

Up near the City Oil Field:

And an imaginary hillside along Figueroa near Chinatown:

Have you ever wondered what might happen if you accidentally hit the gas while pulling into your garage?

And what stopped this hurling mass of metal? Non other than the family's backyard incinerator!

Oh, I know that old city so well, should fire mine up again too, just to take a drive and listen to the radio.

That's exactly what I was doing...just cruising the boulevards. I've beaten the game three or four times by now, thus removing any element of surprise to the actual detective work, so now if and when I pop in the disc I just drive around looking for new facets to explore. Speaking of which, here's the rest from my recent drive:

I do love the signage in this game...

As most of you know the Hotel Barbara still stands / known today as the Hotel Barbizon. (complete with rooftop sign)
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=13933

Gee, maybe there's some Jack Dempsey memorabilia hidden away in the basement.
__

I haven't been rudely kicked out of an LA building in a while... think I'll infiltrate that basement on my next visit.

LAPL has these pictures of Jack that I hadn't seen before. Location unspecified but I'm sure this is the Barbara Inn at the hotel.

http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics18/00008599.jpg

http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics18/00008595.jpg

We've had this one on NLA before... just noting the uniforms are the same as above. (LAPL identifies it as ""Jack Dempsey and restauraunt staff")
http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics18/00008600.jpg

Problem with the service? Let me introduce you to our complaint department

Does anyone else think this one was taken outside the Barbara? (looking at the streetlight up the block...)

Paradise Leased

We've seen Dempsey here before, of course, although I see that quite a few pictures in some posts are missing now. Anyway, I was reminded of the house above, once at 2415 S Western Ave--Dempsey lived here in the early '20s before moving to Los Feliz ca. 1925. (That house was built by the recently mentioned Harley Earl and is at 2047 Laughlin Park Drive, formerly 5254 Los Feliz Blvd.) Steve Vaught has more on Dempsey's domestic arrangements at Paradise Leased. I'm not sure how he came to be associated with it, but one place Dempsey didn't live, despite much insistence on the web that he did, is 3741 West 27th Street--despite Dempsey's lack of presence there, its story is interesting:

I have said for years that given sufficient passage of time history will eventually appear as the writers either think it was or thought it should be and pass it off as fact. The Dempsey residence story appears to be one of those recitations. One of the more interesting probably non facts about the house in Los Faliz has to do with the alleged business that in 1925 Dempsey moved into the Harley Earl house; which might have been a bit of a shock to Harley who may have still resided there given in 1925 Harley was still in the employ of broadcaster and Cadillac Dealer Don Lee who had purchased the Earl Coach Works in 1919. Harley Earl did not make his move to Detroit until 1927 although retained in 1926 to redesign the La Salle for GM. So how about a bit of sleuth work by someone to determine if Harley Earl was shown as owner of the house in question after 1925.

GW you're a car fan and a really good digger of obscure facts, want to give it a go?

The 1923 CD lists Harley Earl's residence as 7021 Hollywood Boulevard. He's listed at the 5254 Los Feliz Boulevard address in the 1926 CD, but gone by 1927. Hope this helps.

Re 5254 Los Feliz Blvd/2047 Laughlin Park

Unless one might somehow have access to the actual paperwork involved in their real estate transactions, the public record regarding Earl's and Dempsey's reveals as much of the truth as anyone is likely to find--and we know newspapers, censuses, and directories are not entirely reliable sources. I realize that I didn't make myself clear--while Dempsey is written of in newspaper articles as having moved to Los Feliz in late 1925, he didn't move into the Earl house until later. In the 1926CD--compiled largely in 1925--he was at 2531 N Commonwealth and the Earls were listed at 5254 Los Feliz Blvd along with Mrs. Earl's parents, although by the middle of 1926 or so the Earls and the Carpenters would have two separate houses on adjacent properties (Carpenters = 5242). The lease in May 1926 and then sale of the Earl house to Dempsey when they moved to Detroit is mentioned in several sources--the date given for the actual sale in reliable sources is quite specific: January 5, 1927.

Harley Earl built this house on property he bought from Cecil B. DeMille.

Mrs. Earl behind the wheel of her 1927 LaSalle--her husband's design--in front of her parents' house in May 1927. According to their grandson, the Earls were back in L.A. for a vacation at that time. Billy--seen with his mother in the car--was dead two weeks later.

LAT May 20, 1927

Apparently, Billy had some sort of treatment for a cold that resulted in a throat hemorrhage (what could this precedure possibly have been?) and died in his mother's arms.

I think the cylinders are straw dispensers with a window on the side to see how many straws were left. I have one similar one that is clear all the way around.

Kremal was a non-alcoholic beverage that was supposed to taste like beer. It was made right here in Los Angeles by the Edward R. Maier Brewing Company which later made the famous (or infamous, to this site) "Brew 102" . At one point, during prohibition, the plant was raided since apparently some of the brew was above the legal limit for alcohol content.

As oldstuff mentioned, Kremal was a drink. Some Googling led me to a couple of newspaper ads from 1919, unfortunately behind a paywall so I can't get a readable picture, but the text is:

KREMAL
First for Thirst

The new cereal beverage of superior quality contains all the rich, nourishing, blood-building ingredients of selected grain without the alcohol.
KREMAL is similar to good beer in taste, color and flavor, invigorating and thirst quenching, not intoxicating.
KREMAL is thoroughly predigested and positively will not ferment in the stomach.
KREMAL is both food and drink.
KREMAL is healthful and nutritious, an everyday drink.
