I think NY needs to move away from the red-brick warehouse look for these kind of buildings, it is getting rather dull and repetitive. There is too much red brick in NYC and too many industrial style designs IMO. I'd like to see different materials and tones used for these kind of projects. I find the developers or architects going a very safe route here, too safe.
I actually think it will be a nice albeit boring addition--I'd rather go the safe red brick route rather than something Bjark Engel-y, which has the potential to look extremely terrible when we're looking at his buildings come 2023... it'll be totally dominated by the Hudson Yards anyways, so it's irrelevant.

I agree with the fact that the looks of this tower are quite irrelevent considering its location and because its sits right next to the area that will see the most action in the next decade. But if you're reffering to Bjark Engel's W57 as "potentially terrible", I STRONGLY disgree with that opinion. This is perhaps the best designed highrise residential building ever built in nyc, and it will anchor a stretch of the West Side highway that is quite boring so it will standout and in my opinion, it will end up being a classic building in nyc.

^^ I walked by this recently and noticed that only the low-rise portion has risen above street level. I bet they will install a tower crane for the high-rise portion of the building. Perhaps that phase will come this summer...

Anyone know what's being built in the foreground in the photo below? The lowrise that was there was demolished within the past 8 months or so. This stretch of the High Line is just non stop cranes, and backhoes, and excavators, so it's a bit difficult to keep track...

photo is mrnyc's

^^ Correct. This is what it will look like.

With all these buildings going up, the Highline is going to become more enclosed and have a more intimate feel.

After what seemed like years seeing this work its way to street level, the progress is impressive.
