$1B soccer redevelopment initiative announced for 'Q' site

A $200 million soccer stadium as part of a $1 billion redevelopment of the Qualcomm Stadium property in Mission Valley was proposed Monday with a citizens ballot initiative drive as the vehicle to bring it about.

The facility containing 20,000 to 30,000 seats and projected to open in 2020 could also be used by San Diego State University’s Aztecs football team and other soccer teams.

The project, coming 10 days after the Chargers relocated to Los Angeles, came from FS Investors, a La Jolla and San Mateo investment group with a variety of present and past ventures, including some sports and commercial developments.

Convention center expansion clears legal hurdle

Efforts to expand the city’s convention center got a major boost Wednesday when a judge rejected a legal challenge that sought to block such a development on the waterfront.

Although there currently is no funded project, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and other civic leaders had been awaiting the outcome of a lawsuit by attorney Cory Briggs before moving forward on any future planning efforts.

At issue in the court case was whether the California Coastal Commission violated state law when it approved a $520 million bayfront expansion more than three years ago.

That project has been in limbo since an appellate court more than two years ago ruled in another Briggs case that the financing plan was unconstitutional.
