Apostrophe-Shaped Bridge Doubles as a Ride for Pedestrians

Shaped like an apostrophe and bearing a shark-inspired fin, the Scale Lane Bridge in Hull, England allows pedestrians to go along for the ride when it swings open to allow ships passage. Made of black steel in a curving form, it resembles a ship when tucked up against the riverbank and viewed from afar.

Never knew about that bridge in Hull, it looks very interesting. Some other pedestrian bridges in the UK not mentioned before:

Iron Bridge
Located in a quaint part of Shropshire, the Iron Bridge is the world’s first arch bridge constructed (between 1775-1779) from cast iron. Now 234 years old, the bridge (and surrounding settlements) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its connection to the Industrial Revolution. Due to its age and construction it is unsuitable for automobiles.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge
A pedestrian & cycling bridge opened in 2001 that mimics the design of Newcastle’s famous (upstream) Tyne Bridge. The bridge can also tilt to allow boats to travel up the river.

Shad Thames
I noticed that people had previously posted bridges connected buildings, so what better than to include the various bridges connecting warehouses in Shad Thames near Tower Bridge.

Bridge of Aspiration
Connects the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden to the Royal Ballet School on the opposite side of Floral Street.

Lusail Pedestrian Bridges, Qatar
Construction underway on 200m bridge for pedestrians in Qatar's newest planned city

After last year’s commission of the Lusail Pedestrian Bridges in Qatar, Octatube is now taking their part of the project into the installation phase. The design has been drawn by San Diego-based Safdie Rabines Architects.

Since 2006 the Lusail Real Estate Development Company has started to develop a 38 sq km site 15 km north of Doha. This new project is one of the largest commercial projects in the Gulf States.

The theme of Lusail, Qatar’s future city, has everything to do with water. The concept for the two pedestrian bridges is that of a necklace being draped along the ring of the island marina. After the realisation of a mock-up the first embedded elements are now on site.

The two cable-stayed bridges are brought to life with structural glass floors, aluminium louvre canopies, glass kiosk canopies and glass balustrades. Including the ramps, both bridges are approximately 200m long and span 90m from one quay to the other. Each bridge is fully illuminated, stimulating leisure activities during cooler evening temperatures.
