PHL Collective: new Center City game studio is staffed with local grads

Founder Nick Madonna himself is a native Philadelphian. The developer who's worked on games like F.E.A.R., Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and TimeShift grew up in South Philly, he said.

Manayunk Canal overhaul to focus on better lighting, signage

On Rector Street, a proposed idea includes leveling off a cobblestoned area and turning it into a public seating. For the Green Lane entrance, turning the wooden steps into an accessible ramp was discussed. Attendees also talked about the need to make Canal View Park a more open space, that is better lit and more visible from Main Street.

Lighting on the water and on the facade of the buildings on the canal was also discussed.

"There are some wonderful old buildings back there and you can really make a visual statement here," said Sykora.

The group plans to wrap up feasibility planning by July.

Demo work from Friday....

There were a pair of workers on a platform lift cutting the beams with a torch....

Wasn't able to get a shot of it, but they then moved the platform over in front of the horizontal beam and *literally* kicked the beam down!

The workers were like "you missed the show" haha....

Seriously, this thing can't go soon enough! Anyone have any idea when demo work might begin?

Groundbreaking for this project is supposed to occur in April... so this beast should be seeing the wrecking ball any day now.

I did happen to notice that an application to serve alcoholic beverages posting (or whatever the official title of those obnoxious orange signs) had been posted - almost in the bushes - with Whole Foods as the business listed. The posting date was mid January. So...who wants to go drinking at Whole Foods?! Ha.

I have a friend who does that at the one in Plymouth Meeting, it's not bad if your killing time before a movie but sitting and watching some of the people on that store is pretty frustrating.

A nice Inga column popped up today about Paseo Verde at 9th and Berks. It's a very good assessment, and it looks like the project got just about everything right. It's an amazing improvement from the desolate empty lot I remember seeing every day on SEPTA.

Pardon my ignorance, but if someone drove into that V-post with their car, would that whole bay of units collapse?

I doubt that the it would do much to the V-post. It would be no different then running into one of the El support columns.

University of Pennsylvania | Perry World House | 38th Street and Locust Walk

Just found this recent progress meeting report with lots of interesting details:

http://www.djkeating.com/ftp/ESTIMAT...ress_final.pdf

Apparently, the old frat house will be partially demolished, with the remaining portion being incorporated into a new, larger structure. Construction is currently targeted to begin in May of this year, and be finished by January 2016. And perhaps most significantly for Philly in general (and the Penn campus in particular), the plans include significant landscaping and improvements along 38th Street between the Locust Walk Bridge and Walnut Street.
